The road to San Francisco runs through Mexico, Italy and Canada. With a detour in Miami.
"We're here to win. We're here to get to San Francisco," said Joe Torre, the Team USA manager trying to accomplish what his two predecessors didn't - claiming bragging rights to "our national pastime" by winning the World Baseball Classic.
"It's our game," Torre said. "It doesn't mean other players can't play it as well or better."
Buck Martinez's and Davey Johnson's teams failed to reach the championship game in 2006 and 2009, and now Torre's group is giving it a whirl in the three-tiered tournament, starting with Friday night's opener against Mexico at Chase Field.
