U.S.-Canada Monopoly Bad for Women's Hockey

SOCHI — The work of American hockey pioneer Julie Chu won't be complete until Team USA gets beat.

That's not a misprint. It's the fondest dream of a player who loves her sport too much to see it die.

"We've got to have a bigger-picture mentality about the growth of our game," Chu said Monday, after the U.S. women trounced Sweden 6-1 in a semifinal game of the Olympic tournament. "A lot of people say: 'Julie, you realize that you're trying to build up other countries so they beat you?' At the end of the day: Yes, I'd rather have women's hockey in the Olympics and eight great teams in a field that anyone can upset anyone else."

The United States vs. Sweden was the most lopsided big game I have seen since Seattle scored 43 points in the Super — well, never mind. (Yeah, Broncos fans. You're correct. It's too soon.)
