PetroSun Independence Bowl
Dec. 30, 8pm
Teams: Alabama Crimson Tide (6-6) vs. Colorado Buffaloes (6-6)
Betting Line: Alabama is favored by 3.5 points.
Fun Fact: It was one of the first bowl games to use a title sponsor. Who can forget the Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl? It was later dubbed the Weedwacker Bowl and that term is still used to descibe bowls with less than the best competition...like say...Alabama vs. Colorado.
Notable Schwag for the Players: Sony Bravia surround sound system; New Era cap
Preview: The past two seasons have ended with dissappointment for the Crimson Tide. Last year they lost their last four regular season games to end up in this same bowl. This season they lost their last three to repeat its fate. The Tide leads all teams with 55 Bowl appearances, but if they lose this game they will have back-to-back losing seasons for the first time in 45 years.
Alabama has had inconsistent play from their QB John Parker-Wilson. He's completing just 55% of his passes and has just 15 touchdowns to his 11 interceptions. But, he has one of the best targets in the nation in Senior WR DJ Hall. Hall accounted for over 37% of Alabama's receiving yards.
Colorado will need to be able to run the ball behind RB Hugh Charles who had 989 rushing yards this season. Colorado also has inconsistent QB behind Cody Hawkins. Hawkins threw 19 picks this season and completed just 56% of his passes.
