Bowl Preview: Sugar Bowl

by Robbie Gillies

Allstate Sugar Bowl

Date: Jan 1, 8:30pm
Site: New Orleans, LA
Stadium: Georgia Dome

Teams: #10 Hawaii Warriors (12-0) vs. #4 Georgia Bulldogs (10-2)

Betting Line: Georgia is favored by 7.5 points.

Brief History: The Sugar Bowl has been played annually since 1935, making it tied for the second oldest bowl game in the country. The Sugar Bowl has been played at The Superdome since 1976, with the exception of 2006, when it was played in the Georgia Dome because of the damage from Hurricane Katrina.

Fun Fact: Since 1998 Georgia has traveled just 358 miles for non-conference road games, whereas Hawaii has traveled 72,918 miles.

Notable Schwag for the Players: Sony mini digital MP-4 camcorder; Watch; Ogio rolling duffel bag; Leather jacket. It seems fitting that a guy named Colt Brennan is walking around New Orleans in a leather jacket. I also assume he has a pack of Marlboro's rolled up in his sleeve.

Preview: Hawaii looks to follow in Boise State's footsteps last season. Like BSU, Hawaii is the WAC Champion, undefeated, but a big underdog against a college football powerhouse. Boise State was able to defeat Oklahoma in one of the most entertaining college football games ever; can Hawaii make it two years in a row for the WAC?

Hawaii is led by QB Colt Brennan. Brennan finished 3rd for the Heisman this past season and has broken many college football records, including most career touchdown passes, and most touchdown passes in a single season (2006). Brennan has three outstanding wide receivers that each have gained over 1,000 yards this season. Ryan Grice-Mullen caught 100 passes for 1,335 yards and 12 TD; Davone Bess caught 101 passes for 1,213 yards and 12 TD's; and Jason Rivers caught 82 passes for 1,069 yards and 13 TD's.

Since a loss to Tennessee on October 6th, Georgia has won six straight games, three over ranked opponents. Their big offensive threat is SEC Freshman of the Year RB Knowshon Moreno. Moreno had 1,273 rushing yards and 12 TD's. During the Bulldogs six game winning streak, Moreno has averaged over 150 rushing yards per game and has scored nine touchdowns.
