Philadelphia has a champion! The names are legendary: Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, Moses Malone, Julius Erving, Bernie Parent, Bobby Clark, and now Matt D'Orazio and Chris Jackson.
Philadelphia's championship drought, dating back to 1983, is now over, with the Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl XXII Championship victory by the Philadelphia Soul. Everyone in the city is so excited, the jinx is done! Wait, no, it's not. In fact, 74% of people who responded to an online poll think it doesn't count.
Well, so much for my plan of taking the next week off and running around the city with my chest painted. As far as I could tell, when I arrived home last night, there was no one dancing in the streets and no cars on fire. This championship probably goes along with the following Philly winners since 1983: three Major League Lacrosse champions, two Indoor Soccer titles, two World Team Tennis winners, two American Hockey League champs, and six National Lacrosse League victors. I guess this city just doesn't care about its sports teams. At least Bon Jovi is happy.
