Reporter Tries The 'Michael Phelps Breakfast'

by Ryan Hudson

It is now nearly common knowledge that Michael Phelps eats roughly 12,000 calories each day, including a reported pound of pasta and a whole pizza, just for dinner. But perhaps his most famous meal was his breakfast.

- Three sandwiches of fried eggs, cheese, lettuce, tomato, fried onions and mayonnaise
- One omelet
- Bowl of grits
- Three slices of French toast with powdered sugar
- Three chocolate chip pancakes

Well, one ambitious reporter, WTOP's Mark Segraves, decided to see if he could accomplish Phelps' Olympian feat (the eating part, not the swimming). Fortunately, there's video.

UPDATE: Thing did not end well for Segraves.

After 20 minutes, he was slowing down and looking tired. His head was dropping.

"He got up, walked slowly to the bathroom," Smith recalls. "I followed, but he shut the door in my face. Everybody in that corner of the restaurant was rooting for him, but they knew this was bad news."

Finally, the white flag came to the morning editor in the form of an email from Segraves' Blackberry:

"Just blew chunks. No way I can stand the smell of this place much longer or I'm gonna heave again. You picked the wrong guy for this detail. Sorry."
