What to Watch: Weekend Edition

by Robbie Gillies

FRIDAY
3pm and 7pm ET - ESPN2 - Australian Open - Follow along with the bracket.

7pm ET - ESPN – NBA: Mavericks at Pistons - Rick Carlisle returns to the Palace of Auburn Hills. But the bigger story is that neither of these teams have been able to find their identity. They have nearly identical records and both have been big disappointment so far.

9:30pm - ESPN - Winter X Games - They'll be doing tricks on snowmobiles!

9:30pm - ESPN2 - High School Basketball: Fairfax vs. San Diego - Fairfax has two players in Rivals.com's top 30 for 2009 and San Diego has one at #50. The top prospect is Renardo Sidney that Rivals.com ranks as the 10th best recruit. How good is he? Well, Luke Wynn of SI thinks he could be the #1 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.

Non-sports pick - 8pm - TCM - Dr. Strangelove - What better way to welcome in an era of uncertainty with a new President than with this political satire of world destruction.

SATURDAY
12pm - ESPN – NCAA Basketball: Maryland at #2 Duke - As long as Duke doesn't lose they will takeover as the #1 team in the nation and Coach K will be happy again.

2pm - ESPN2 - NCAA Basketball: DePaul at #11 Marquette - Marquette's 5-0 in the Big East and DePaul is 0-6. Anything more need to be said?

2pm - ESPN - NCAA Basketball: Kansas at Iowa State - Kansas looks to stay perfect in Big 12 play.

3:30pm - CBS - NCAA Basketball: #22 Memphis at Tennessee - Tennessee snapped Memphis' 29-game winning streak last season. This has turned into quite a rivalry.

4pm - ESPN - NCAA Basketball: Wisconsin at #25 Illinois - The Badgers look to snap a three-game losing streak.

4pm - ABC - Winter X Games - Snowboarder Finals.

7pm - ESPN - NCAA Basketball: #3 Connecticut at #19 Notre Dame - The Fighting Irish haven't lost in South Bend since February 25th, 2006.

8pm - ESPN2 - NCAA Basketball: #15 Xavier at LSU - Xavier's the cream of the crop in the A-10, but LSU should be a formidable opponent.

9pm - ESPN - Winter X Games - Skiing Big Air Final sounds cool.

Non-sports pick - 8pm - TLC - Miss America 2009 - These girls are really going to represent the USA?

Although, I suspect that the massive airbrushing and multiple pounds of makeup didn't work in their favor.

SUNDAY
1pm - ABC – NBA: Mavericks at Celtics - The Mavs are fighting to stay in the playoff hunt in the West and the Celtics are fighting for the top spot in the East.

1:30pm - CBS – NCAA Basketball: #24 Florida at Vanderbilt - Florida really blew it against South Carolina - allowing a lay-up as time expired. Time for them to rebound.

2pm - ESPN2 - Winter X Games - More snowmobile tricks and some other snowy stuff.

3:30pm - ABC – NBA: Spurs at Lakers - The last time these two teams played, the Lakers were short-handed and it took a Roger Mason 3-point play in the closing minute for the Spurs to pull it out. The Lakers will be looking to exact revenge in LA.

3:45pm - CBS - NCAA Basketball: #7 Michigan State at Ohio State - The Spartans were just upset by Northwestern at home. You never know what you'll get from Michigan State.

6:30pm - ESPN – NBA: Rockets at Pistons - Ron Artest returns to Detroit!

10pm - ESPN2 - Australian Open - It starts to get interesting with the quarterfinals.

9:00pm - ESPN - Winter X Games - Snowboard Superpipe Men's Final is probably the best event at the Winter X Games.

Non-sports pick - 6:30pm - USA - Crank - "A hit man (Jason Statham) awakes to the news that he has been poisoned and will die in an hour unless he keeps adrenaline coursing through his body." God, that's an amazing excuse for an awesome action flick.
