I've got the Jets season preview all cued up and ready to go Monday morning.
I'm not changing it...because, really, the Jets' final cuts don't change my opinion about the team's performance this year.
But they've gone and given me a really bad feeling in my gut - a feeling I'm all too familiar with.
I'm sure John Conner will be fine at the fullback position. I'm not sitting here thinking that Tony Richardson was a way better fullback and deserved to be on the team. But the lack of a guy like Tony Richardson on the team gives me a nervous feeling.
First it was Alan Faneca, then it was Thomas Jones. Two quality clubhouse guys gone. Enter Antonio Cromartie and Santonio Holmes. Two guys that are more likable than I thought they'd be, but they're guys that don't make the best decisions. They're not the type of guys you look to for leadership on a team. Tony Richardson is.
And with Richardson gone, the Jets just don't have very many of those leadership-type guys.
There's a possibility the Jets will sign Richardson back after Week 1, but some other team has to try to lock him up while he's available, no?
There's something about this team right now that gives me a sick feeling. Maybe it's that whole Jason Taylor thing last week - where he spends very little time with the rest of the team. Maybe that's why he hasn't won anything in the NFL.
Maybe it's the fact that the offense hasn't gotten anything going...and the defense wasn't really taking things seriously at their practice when they brought in junk food in the middle of a practice.
Maybe it's the fact that I just can't get past disappointments from the Jets my whole life, and on the eve of what could be their greatest season in 40+ years, I just won't believe it until I see it.
Maybe the fact that we've been granted unfiltered access to the Jets, warts and all, has me thinking way too much.
Wednesday night we watch Tony Richardson get cut on 'Hard Knocks'. Then we put all speculation behind us and the regular season is upon us.
It can't come soon enough.
