A Storybook Season
Sunday Paper (Year 3, Volume XXXVI)
Here we are, a week away from the start of the Jets season.
No longer are they lovable losers (well, they weren't widely loved...but loved by me, anyway)...now they're the team trying to get over the championship hump.
Of course, for the Jets to have a 'storybook' season, they'll have to win the Super Bowl in Indianapolis come February...but how might the rest of that season shape up?
Here are some thoughts.

Week 1 vs. Dallas - A sense of how this year will be different than last: in an emotionally charged nighttime opener, the Jets beat the Cowboys by ten - 20-10, making last year's loss to Baltimore under similar circumstances ancient history.
Week 2 vs. Jacksonville - But a week later they show they're still the Jets - In a game that is closer than it should be, the Jets hold on to beat the Jaguars, 17-16.
Week 3 at Oakland - No sneaking hot dogs for Mark Sanchez this time in Oakland...instead, a career game, throwing for 4 touchdowns in a 34-17 win.
Week 4 at Baltimore - A statement win against a team that has caused them trouble - 10-0.
Week 5 at New England - They're not going undefeated...the first loss comes in New England, 28-17.
Week 6 vs. Miami - A big bounceback win in the division on Monday night, with a 30-10 victory.
Week 7 vs. San Diego - An early matchup for conference supremacy results in a Jets' 24-17 win.
Week 9 at Buffalo - After the bye week, the Jets beat the Bills 41-7.
Week 10 vs. New England - The Jets split the season with New England, beating the Patriots 23-13 at home.
Week 11 at Denver - After a short turnaround, the Jets go into Denver and sneak by the Broncos, 17-14.
Week 12 vs. Buffalo - Sweep the Bills, 30-10.
Week 13 at Washington - 27-20, Jets.
Week 14 vs. Kansas City - 13-3, Jets.
Week 15 at Philadelphia - Philly continues their march to the top of the NFC East with a 24-21 win over the Jets.
Week 16 vs. Giants - Plaxico Burress catches two touchdowns against his old team, leading the Jets to a 17-10 win.
Week 17 at Miami - Jets need a win to clinch the division and a first-round bye...they get both with the 24-20 win.
Playoffs, Round 2 - This year the Jets get the Patriots at MetLife Stadium, but the result is the same - a 27-21 win to advance to their third straight AFC Championship Game.
AFC Championship - The Jets finally play a complete game in the AFC Championship, shutting out Baltimore for the second time this season, advancing to the Super Bowl with a 20-0 win.
Super Bowl - It's a storybook season - of course they win it...later in the week I'll have the rest of my NFL picks including the Jets' Super Bowl opponent.
*Saturday was the last cut-down day in the NFL - the Jets have their 53-man roster for the season. No heart-breaking personnel losses this year. The big loss is an injury rather than a cut - Greg McElroy was injured in the final preseason game. After a shaky start in his first preseason action McElroy had a solid preseason overall, instilling confidence in the backup QB position beyond the "old man" Mark Brunell. Too bad for him that he'll be sidelined to start the year.
*Looks like I'll be going to my first Jets game of the year in Week 2 against Jacksonville.
*Time for a quick update on two of our favorite all-time Mets:
-David Wright has caught fire again - his average is up to .275, and he has 21 doubles now in his abbreviated season.
-I forgot to update the Gary Carter situation last week - he was given the OK to take the stronger medication last week, and it sounds like it was a rough go at first. Carter's daughter also mentioned that Howard Johnson visited his former teammate this past week - interesting because there was another HoJo mention in the news this week.
*Frustrating hearing that the David Einhorn deal fell through. Had a busy week, so I don't know all of the details surrounding it...but sounds like the Wilpons are afraid they'll lose control of the team, right?
*So, the Rockies didn't waste much time proving me wrong about a run for the division, huh? Forget about that.
*Got my college football fix Saturday...now I'm ready for the NFL.
*Despite increasing aggravation with it, I continue listening to Joe Posnanski's 'Poscast'. He's an excellent writer. He's not an excellent podcaster. But this week he announced that it will be his last podcast for a few months, because he is going on assignment for the book he is writing on Joe Paterno (I'm sure someone has said it, but he hasn't: Joe Pa by Joe Po?). I kind of hope he doesn't come back to the podcast...or maybe three months of downtime are enough for me to give up on it without aggravating my OCD tendencies/need to listen to them all. On the subject of Posnanski's writing, though, Justin from Sports Crackle Pop! this week directed me towards this (long) article by Posnanski about the year 1986. It's 1986, so that's automatic must-read for me...but it's very good beyond just October of that year. Set aside some time and give it a read.
*I didn't really post as much as I would have liked this summer, and returning to school this week was particularly tough in the writing department. But know that I still have the desire to write, and the promise of this Jets season will probably provide considerable motivation. I'll have some previews this week, including a Jets-Cowboys preview of some sort on Saturday. Thanks for reading and coming back each time I post. I appreciate it.
