$50 Better Championship was Possible
For those of us who waited a whoooooole extra week of the new year to FINALLY reach the BCS National Title game, I think it was a little disappointing that LSU didn't show up.
There, I said it. As the announcers reminded viewers many time, it was 44 days since teams last played (actually LSU in SEC title game vs. Arkansas), and despite that excess of potential prep time, the Bayou Bengals seemed to have no clue about cracking any part of 'Bama's defense.
Crack? Geeez, they might've whipped an awful lot of people this year, but that 43 yards of offense at the half says they didn't put as much as a dent in Alabama. The idea ol' Les should've switched QBs at the half or maybe even at the end of 3rd quarter won't be an opinion you'll be reading here for the first time. If I hadn't had the opportunity to smoke a superb Baccarat Churchill and imbibe a bit of Couvessier among a dozen male peers, I'd have been ticked off at 5 of 7 FGs from one team and bubkis from the other, the heck with notions of "rock hard defensive play."
Really, as ineffective as Jefferson was, WHY (and Bobby H., you don't get to spout off to THAT degree unless you've had a career that includes a couple years like Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers just hung on the board) not put the #2 guy in? I realize LSU won with D and special teams this year, and that safety Mathieu is a piece of work you gotta love, but daaa-yummm! as they might say between mouthfuls of gumbo, Jefferson wasn't going to get them into the end zone if they played till Wednesday.
As for a $50 better championship, I have to admit that when Richardson cruised around left end for the only TD of the game and my compadres inquired "who has the 2 square?" I was mighty glad to say MOI! I didn't have it spent yet, though I was considering the replacing of host Jim S's fine cigar with a portion of the proceeds. Guy hits 5 of 7, mostly from the far left hashs, he's GOTTA be able to knock it through better than the doink! He came up with from straight ahead, right?
Are there better teams than LSU right now? I believe the voters will say yes-- even if Okla. St. might just be a blip on the historical screen, they played exceptionally well at the end. Does Michigan deserve any great consideration? Hey, play that good again in '12 and people will forgive you most of last 5 years efforts. Arkansas? Gooooood stuff Razorbacks, and tough a division as you play in, my sympathies in the future. All those 6-6 "bowl eligible" guys, with whatever respect to your efforts and the reward a bowl game is for you and your fans or the economy of 20 or 30 cities, this game could've happened on Jan. 2 and a lot of people could've been happy missing the Whatever.com stuff.
Course, I would've been happy with one less doink!
