Philbin leads Fins into future

PHILBIN.jpgSo, it's official, as Saturday the Dolphins announced former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin would be the 10th coach in franchise history.

What does this mean for Miami? Well, Philbin is an offensive mind, which is what owner Stephen Ross wanted in his next coach. But he is not the young, dynamic coach Ross had wanted for Miami, as Philbin is 50 and has bounced around for awhile before getting this big break.

Also, there is the fact Philbin did not call his own plays while at Green Bay. He does seem to have the respect of his former players and Coach Mike McCarthy, who made statements regarding how much they would miss Philbin in Wisconsin, and how vital he was to their success.

Miami has the ninth pick in them upcoming draft, but the Dolphins will surely be out of the running for either of the two elite quarterbacks available, Andrew Luck of Stanford and Robert Griffin III of Baylor. There are some intriguing names left who are not quite first-round material: Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden, N.C. State's Russell Wilson, and Boise State's Kellen Moore.

As we saw last year, there's value to be had outside the first round, as Cincinnati proved with rookie Andy Dalton, a third-round selection, who led the Bengals to a 9-7 record and a playoff berth in his first season.

Again, the Dolphins must choose wisely, and there's also the specter of Matt Flynn, the Green Bay backup quarterback who threw for six TD passes in his only start this season, and is a free agent and was thought to be following Philbin to wherever he landed.

I saw Flynn play against New England last season when Aaron Rodgers was out with a concussion, and he shockingly gave the Patriots all they could handle in a close loss. I think he's certainly an upgrade over incumbent Matt Moore, though I don't known if he's an elite-level quarterback.

Now, on to the playoff picks.

Unfortunately, computer error kept me from making my picks last week, and of course, I would've gone 3-1, missing only on the Green Bay-New York Giants game.

I like the way the 49ers have played all season, and the fact they beat the Giants earlier this year and are hosting the NFC Championship Game certainly bodes well.

But, I'm starting to believe all the pundits who are saying the Giants are a team of destiny, and I think their relentless pass rush will make things difficult for Alex Smith. Also, I think New York's offense is red hot, so I believe Eli Manning books another trip to the Super Bowl. Giants 21, 49ers 17.

The AFC Championship features a peaking Patriots team against a confounding Ravens team that seems to play to the level of its opponent each week. Last week, Baltimore looked uninspiring against the undermanned Texans, but I don't think that will be the case this week. The Ravens always play Tom Brady tough, and remember, this is largely the same team that walloped the Pats in Gillette Stadium in the playoffs two years ago. I don't think this will be a blowout, as New England has more weapons than it did in that previous meeting. But, I have a suspicion that maligned Joe Flacco and the offense will play their best game in some time, and expose a Patriots defense that had the luxury of facing the overrated Tim Tebow last week. Ravens 27, Patriots 23.
