Ravens Roll Past Panthers 17-13

The Baltimore Ravens came into Bank of America Stadium and took it to the Panthers on Saturday night, riding their perennially strong defense and an impressive performance by QB Joe Flacco to a 17-13 win over the Cats.

Flacco, the Ravens' second-year quarterback out of Delaware, completed 23 of 28 passes for 247 yards and one touchdown, and led the Birds on two long touchdown drives of 80 and 90 yards as Baltimore roared out to a 17-3 lead.

Ravens' wide receivers Derrick Mason and Kelley Washington combined for nine pass receptions and 137 receiving yards as Flacco's aerial assault carved up an injury-depleted Carolina defense that played without Jon Beason, Thomas Davis, Charles Godfrey, and Maake Kemoeatu, who is lost for the season with a torn achillies tendon injury.

Carolina also played without their talented running back tandem of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart but star wide receiver Steve Smith played in his first preseason game of the year, catching two passes for 37 yards.

Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme completed 11 of 16 passes for 180 yards and rookie running back Mike Goodson rushed for 52 yards in 11 carries to lead the Panthers' offense, but the Cats couldn't put the ball into the end zone against the Ravens' first-team defense.

The Ravens improved their preseason record to 3-0 with the win, while the loss dropped the Panthers to 0-3 in preseason games.
