Panthers' Team Executives Resign

In a surprising development, Panthers' team president Mark Richardson and stadium president Jon Richardson resigned today without saying why they were leaving the Carolina franchise.

The Richardson brothers are the sons of Panthers' owner Jerry Richardson, the founder of the Carolina franchise.  Mark Richardson headed the team's marketing efforts and ran the club's day-to-day business operations in his role as team president, while Jon Richardson has managed the operations of Bank of America Stadium since it opened in 1996.

"Mark and Jon made great contributions to the team and stadium that have enabled us to enjoy much success over the past 15 years," Jerry Richardson said in a statement released to the press.  "At the same time, we are fortunate to have a staff that has been in place for many years and knows our organizational philosophy."

The Richardson brothers will remain a part of the Panthers Partnership Group, the team's ownership group, but their resignations take effect immediately and it is unclear who will take on their roles and run the Carolina franchise in the future.

The brothers had been expected to eventually take over the team from their 73-year old father and the unexpected resignations will certainly ignite rumors of the franchise possibly being sold.
