Could Tony Gonzalez Leave For A Contender?

Tony Gonzalez of the Kansas City Chiefs provided a fairly candid interview with local reporters yesterday. He is approaching Shannon Sharpe's all-time yardage record for TEs (49 yards short) which he discussed amongst other things. He gave perhaps his most telling answer to the question regarding his future with the Chiefs.
On whether he has thought he about asking management for a trade:

"Yeah. I definitely could, but I love being a Chief. But if it was something where it was going to take three or four years or whatever before they get this thing right, I think it would be in their best interest to maybe see what they can get and send me off. "

On how much longer he wants to play:

“Right now, I’m definitely coming back next year, but then after that we’ll reevaluate and see. I feel pretty good right now. Barring any serious injury, I know I could come back after next year, but we’ll see how it goes, I don’t really know right now.”

TG is a classy veteran and extremely media savvy so don't expect him to publicly ruffle the front office's feathers any more than this. However, when a guy like TG who knows how the media works and how they can construe words to mean something else says something like this it's pretty obvious what's coming at the end of the season.

Tony Gonzalez will not be a Chief in 2009 - mark it down. If he wants to go, they'll move him to a contender because A) the Chiefs can get much needed draft picks in return and B)TG is still talented so his value hasn't diminished that much.
