Joey Porter Eyeing Season Sack Record

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Joey Porter1.jpgLast year at this time many people (including me) were mocking the Dolphins free agent signing Joey Porter.  Through the Dolphins first 13 games, all losses, Porter generated just 2.5 sacks which was laughable considering he signed on with the Dolphins for $20 million guaranteed just months earlier.  Now, sitting at 10.5 sacks through 7 games and on pace to break the season sack record, look whose laughing.

"I got nine more games to go out and do something that hasn't been done before," Porter said referring to Michael Strahan's single season record of 22 sacks.  He's currently on pace to garner 24 sacks this year.

Last year, Porter hit his peak in terms of how annoying he could be in the media.  His team was terrible and he played like one of the biggest free agent busts of all time.

Thumbnail image for Joey Porter2.jpgThe excuses kept rolling in as to why he wasn't performing.  First it was Cam Cameron's 4-3 defense that wasn't suited to his style.  Then it was his knee injury.  On and on he went, talking and talking and talking.  It made me wish MY head would explode just to shut him up.

Then a funny thing happened - Bill Parcells and the 3-4 defense.  Now, Porter is being used the way he was in Pittsburgh.  A quick and strong OLB, Porter is beginning to gel with the rest of the defense.

I've been weary of Pittsburgh linebackers on the open market because their talents are utilized so perfectly in Pittsburgh's historic 3-4 defense.  The linebackers are strong, fast and fierce.  However, players like Kendrell Bell soured my taste on Pittsburgh backers once they ditch Three Rivers (Yes, it's still Three Rivers in my mind.  Let me be.)

Personally, I'm praying that Porter doesn't break the record.  In fact, I don't want him to come even close to it.  The guy runs his mouth all day despite having little to no accomplishments to speak for it during his time in Miami.
