Fantasy Baseball's Week Eight Waiver Wire

Last week's waiver wire pitchers both had stellar starts. Mike Leake went six strong innings, allowing two runs and received the victory. Scott Olsen went 6 2/3 innings and allowed only one run in Colorado.

This week has two new pitchers who post a WHIP of 0.94 and one who leads the AL in ERA. Who are these diamonds in the ruff,  only one way to find out.

Starting Pitchers in Focus: John Ely

In his first four starts, he is 2-1, with a 3.51 ERA. In 25 and 2/3 innings pitch, he only has three walks and 25 strikeouts.  His WHIP is a staggering 0.94 and has not walked a batter in his last three starts. In May, Ely is 2-0, with an ERA of 2.29 and opponents are hitting a mere .205 against him. Only owned in 7% of ESPN leagues, if available any Fantasy owner should put in a claim right away.

Doug Fister

Over his first seven games, Fister is 3-1, with an ERA of 1.72. Opponents are hitting only .207 against him on the season. He currently leads the AL in ERA and WHIP (0.94). Only owned in 53% of ESPN leagues and 59% of CBS Sportsline leagues, Fantasy owners should grab him before someone else does.

Position Players: Infielders:

2B/SS Cristian Guzman is having a great May. He is hitting .395, with five RBI and seven runs scored. He has an OPS of .902. Only owned in 15% of ESPN leagues and 18% of CBS Sportsline leagues, Fantasy owners looking for another middle infielder, who can hit for average, should consider adding Guzman.

2B Freddy Sanchez, who has been on the disabled list with shoulder and knee injuries, is expected to come to be activated this week. With a career average of .299, Fantasy owners looking for help, should put in a claim for the veteran.

Position Players: Outfielders:

OF Brennan Boesch is off to a great start in Detroit. He is hitting .387, with three home runs and 19 RBI. He has an OPS of 1.077 and has scored eight runs. In May, Boesch is hitting .438, with two home runs and 12 RBI.  Currently owned in 48% of ESPN leagues, Fantasy Owners looking for a No. 5 outfielder should pick him up for Week 8.

OF Corey Hart is starting to get regular plenty time and is showing is Fantasy worth. Over his last 14 games, he is hitting .316, with four home runs and eight RBI. He has scored eight runs and has an OPS of 1.146. Only owned in 29% of ESPN leagues and 46% of CBS Sportsline leagues, he is a recommended pick for Week 8.

A welcome surprise for the Cincinnati Reds, Jonny Gomes is playing very well. On the season, he has five home runs, 25 RBI and has scored 19 runs. He has an OPS of .856 and is hitting .303. In May, Gomes is hitting .400, with three home runs and 12 RBI. Only owned in 6% of ESPN leagues, he is a recommended pick up in mixed leagues.

Relief Pitcher: Manuel Corpas

With Huston Street out until early June, Corpas has taken over as the closer in Colorado. On the year, he is 1-2, with an ERA of 2.73. He is only allowing opposing hitters a .146 batting average. Those in need of saves and need a stopgap closer, should consider Corpas as a No. 2 closer.
