Bears Must Avoid Beavers In The Conference Tournament

pac10-08-icon-cal.gifThe Bears are now 9-5 after falling 80-64 to Oregon State. Just a few weeks back California barely hung on to pull out a 65-61 victory against OSU. The Beavers 1-3-1 zone caused the Bears to struggle with their 3-point shooting. California was 5/20 from three-point land. When they are not falling from long distance it is very difficult for Cal to score inside the paint. Depending on what takes place when Arizona faces Arizona State this Sunday, California's grip on first place could be coming to an end.

With four games remaining on the schedule Cal is now playing for a good seed in the Pac Ten Tournament. One of the teams the Bears would like to avoid is the Beavers and the best way to do that is by winning their last four games and getting a first round bye in the Pac Ten Tournament. If every team in the conference keeps knocking each other off the winner of the Pac Ten regular season would probably be putting themselves in a positive light with the NCAA Selection Committee. If the Beavers finish in 4th or 5th place there could be another match-up with California if the Bears hang onto 1st. For any team in the Pac Ten it is imperative to finish 1st in the regular season, because there are about four teams that are capable of running the table in the conference tournament and automatically qualify for the Big Dance. Teams like Arizona, Washington and UCLA will not be an easy out for their opponents.
