Game #51: Marlins @ Mets

Citi Field - 1:05 PM - Chris Volstad vs John Maine

Now that the defense seems to be coming around (six out of the last eight starts have been QSes), the offense seems to be lacking. Given two chances to tie the game with a sac fly on Sunday afternoon, the team's second best hitter, Jorge Cantu couldn't capitalize on either one and the Marlins dropped the final game of a three game series at Citi Field, 3-2. In their past eight games, the Marlins are hitting .231 and have only scored 34 runs.

Chris Volstad: 7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K - Was just three over the minimum with just one hit and a walk on his record until the 7th when the Mets scored on consecutive doubles. The good news is, for the first time since May 5, Volstad didn't give up a home run, which has been his achilles heel this year (as a matter of fact, he only gave up two hits that were out of the range of infielders) and his 14/4 GO/FO ratio was the best he's posted all year. Volstad continues to be very reliable. He's now gone at least six innings in eight straight starts and has pitched into the 7th in his last two outings.

Jorge Cantu: 0-4, K - At the beginning of may, this guy looked like a possibility for the All-Star game, playing at the level of Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, and Ryan Howard. However, over the span of that month, he lowered his average nearly 100 points and his OPS nearly 300 points by hitting .211 with a .535 OPS and a 20/5 K/BB. A few games ago, he favored his wrist after applying a tag so obviously it is still bothering him. Although he's come up with a couple big RBIs and it would suck to lose his bat and presence in the middle of the order, should these struggles continue into June, given his problems with injuries in the past, a trip to the DL will be necessary.
