Game #53: Marlins vs Brewers

Land Shark Stadium - 7:05 PM - Anibal Sanchez vs Manny Parra

The Marlins' offense exploded all over Manny Parra on Tuesday night, touching the lefty for ten earned runs in just 4 innings en route to a 10-1 win. The most encouraging part? The Marlins are OBPing lefties at a .312 clip.

Dan Uggla: 2-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, BB, K - Hit homer number 100 in his 502nd game, marking the fastest a second baseman has ever reached that plateau. The most encouraging thing was that this and his single in the 3rd came against a lefty, which he came in hitting at just a .133 clip.

Anibal Sanchez: 3 IP, 2 H, ER, 3 BB, 3 K - Was luckier than Nick Pappageorgio in the 1st, throwing 41 pitches, loading the bases with no outs but getting out of it without giving up a run. He proved how lucky he was in the 2nd as he gave up a run on a sac bunt by the opposing pitcher. He lasted just three innings, throwing 71 pitches. In his last three starts, he's given up 17 runs in 17.2 innings. Clearly injuries have taken their toll on Sanchez. With every start he makes, he gets further away from his 2006 form. I don't know how many more chances the Marlins should give this guy as a starter especially when the rotation had a 2.98 ERA in their last five games before his return this time.

Burke Badenhop: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, BB, 2 K - ... and especially with this guy pitching like he is. Had to throw just 67pitches in five innings. He's now given up just one run in his last 9.2 and counting.

Emilio Bonifacio: 1-4, R, BB, K - Has now either seen or swung a first pitch strike 68% of the time in his last eight games, making him the worst two hole option on the team. However, we have to keep his speed up there. I know I keep harping on this but it's worth harping on. The guy is the worst two hole hitter on this team. Fredi's quote about keeping his speed at the top of the order will go down in history as this year's "he's our guy".

Cody Ross: 2-5, R, 5 RBI, K - Grand slam number two of the season. Also made a fantastic diving catch on a wet center field. In his last nine games, Cody is hitting .308 with eight RBIs. Over that span, his OPS has risen from .717 to .750.

Hayden Penn: 1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, K - The only time Fredi Gonzalez has confidence in throwing him is in a 10-1 game. And for good reason. Throwing for the first time since May 23 in the 9th with a 9 run lead, he came in and gave up a two run homer to Ryan Braun marking the third straight game he's given up runs and running his ERA to 6.97 yet the Marlins chose to send Cristhian Martinez back to the minors instead of him.
