Game #58: Marlins vs Giants

Land Shark Stadium - 5:00 PM - Ricky Nolasco vs Tim Lincecum

Tim Lincecum stifled the Marlins on Sunday night, limiting them to just three hits and two runs in 7.1 innings as the Giants spoiled Ricky Nolasco's return to the big leagues, handing him his third straight loss.

Ricky Nolasco: 7 IP, 10 H, 3 R (2 ER), 3 BB, 4 K - Gave up six doubles including one to the opposing pitcher and loaded the bases three times, once with no outs, once with one out, and once with two outs. On a routine night, that would spell at least five runs as the run expectancy with the bases loaded and no outs is 2.4, with one out is 1.6, and with two outs is 0.8 but Nolasco lucked out, stranding the bases loaded three times, and only allowing two earned. I'd like to say this was an improvement by Ricky but looking beyond the box score, it really wasn't. In his first eight starts, he was allowing seven hits per game. His three walks also tied a seasonal high and his four strikeouts were the second least he's had in a 5+ inning outing.

Emilio Bonifacio: 0-4, K - Made another error, his eleventh and his fourth in his last seven games (yes, he already has four errors in June), that allowed the third and eventual winning run to score. At this point, the guy should just start wearing the opposing uniform.

Chris Coghlan: 1-3, R, 2 RBI, BB - Hit his second career homer in the 8th off a guy who has only allowed three homers all year. Coghlan is starting to find his major league stroke nicely and is arguably the hottest hitter in the lineup right now. Since May 24, he is hitting .394 and OBPing .415. As a result, over that span, he's upped his seasonal average from .191 to .224 and his seasonal OBP has risen from .291 to .350.
