Game #56: Marlins vs Giants

Land Shark Stadium - 7:10 PM - Chris Volstad vs Barry Zito

BOX

Chris Volstad threw another quality start on Friday night, his ninth in twelve outings, but unfortunately, he also continued to get pathetic run support and the Marlins fell to the Giants, 2-1 in the first game of a four game series.

Brett Carroll: 0-2, K - Flew out with the bases loaded in the 4th. At first glance, it looked like the Marlins as a whole are great with the bases loaded but to this point, it was really only six guys that were. Excluding Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, Cody Ross, Jorge Cantu, Ross Gload, and Jeremy Hermida, the rest of the team is hitting .000/.000/.000 with 0 SF with the bases loaded.

Alejandro De Aza: 0-0, RBI, BB - Was lucky number 12. Hitting for Carroll in the 6th, he hit a sac fly to right, and moved the runners up to second and third. It's a miniscule sample size but so far, De Aza has had success coming off the bench, going 4 for 13 with a 2:2 K/BB and three RBIs.

Kiko Calero: 1 IP, H, K - He leads the league in relief appearances. Tonight, he ran his scoreless innings streak to 9.1 innings and lowered his ERA to under 2.

Emilio Bonifacio: Has had 125 two strike ABs and 12 three ball ABs. Since May 26, he's swung at two strike pitches 74% of the time. The league average line on two strikes is .181/.257/.270. Bonifacio's is .168/.194/.216. Gotta keep that speed up there.

Chris Coghlan: 0-0 - Instead of going straight to Wes Helms with one out in the 9th, Fredi Gonzalez went to this guy and had him bunt the runner to second, wasting an out. Run expectancy with no outs and a man on first is 0.953. Run expectancy with one out and a man on second is 0.725. Helms struck out on three pitches.
