Game #84: Marlins @ Giants

AT&T Park - 10:15 PM - Sean West vs Matt Cain

BOX

The Marlins made it a game in the 9th against Matt Lindstrom's twin on Monday night in San Francisco but a three run lead would prove to be just enough for the Giants as they took the first game of a three game series, 5-4.

Sean West: 6 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K - Allowed two hits in the 2nd, a triple to Andres Torres in the 3rd, and some hard hit line drives in the 4th. Only four of his first 26 strikes weren't contacted but he was able to hold the Giants to just one run. That would catch up with him in the 5th. After West loaded the bases on a hit and two walks, Pablo Sandoval hit a grand slam. In his last four starts, West has a 6.72 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP. Over that span, he's ran his seasonal ERA from 3.38 up to an above league average 4.47. Because of the great start his career got off to, despite his recent struggles, West will get one more chance to prove he can hack it at this level. That start against the D-Backs will determine what the Marlins will do when Anibal Sanchez is ready to come off the DL.

Cody Ross: 3-4, R - Had a fan interference double in the 2nd and would have had another in the 3rd if not for a perfect throw by Nate Schierholtz. Ross got the last laugh though as in the 8th, he nestled one into the corner for an easy stand-up two bagger. Ross is now hitting a seasonal high .284 and is off to a 8-16 (.500) start this month.

Emilio Bonifacio: 3-5, R, K - He may be doing something in each game to help the Marlins win as he did tonight with his three hits, including a double and a run scored but in his last two games, he's gone back to doing something idiotic as well. After his single, Bonifacio waited until Dan Uggla's fly ball was in Schierholtz's glove before retreating to first to tag up for second. He was thrown out by a step. However, seeing as how he's hitting .258, the highest he has been since May 23 and is off to a .381/.381/.524/.905 start this month, I guess we can forgive him. For now.
