So I was watching Sports Center when I got up this morning, and I was still half asleep but I am fairly confident I heard the anchor (not sure which one I just moved to the US from Canada so ESPN is new to me) say "Span Down" (Man Down) in response to a highlight of Twins outfielder Denard Span getting beaned in the head and hitting the dirt.
I understand that they think it is their job to be funny and provide memorable quotes, and maybe they'll even be featured on Deadspin's Catchphrase-O-Meter. However, there is a time and a place for certain jokes. With the rash of injuries occurring thanks to players getting hit in the head, this comment was completely out of line. I bet Edgar Gonzalez, who missed a month and a half after a similar incident, would not find it very funny. I do not think David Wright would be overly impressed. I doubt this will get any coverage as ESPN pretty much controls sports news, but I thought it should be mentioned.
Span complained of a headache after the game, so here is to hoping he is ok.
