Smoltz is a great find for the Redbirds

John Smoltz turned in his second quality start with the Cardinals in as many tries Friday night. Granted his opposition has been the Padres and Nationals, but Smoltz is pitching like the old days in Atlanta not like the recent past in Boston.

Smoltz appears to have some gas left in that 42-year-old arm and the Cardinals low risk investment is paying dividends. As long as he pitches this well, the bullpen in St. Louis will wait.

Smoltz is a old school competitor and I sense he enjoys pitching in the National League and with the Cardinals. Smoltz does well on the big stage and the Cardinals barring a major colapse will make it to the playoffs this season. Smoltz should contribute with his arm and his postseason savvy.

I have always appreciated Smoltz's talent and professionalism and now that he is doing it with a Cardinal on his uniform, it makes it all the better.

What do you think Smoltz brings to the Cardinals? Does he have a future with the club beyond 2009?
