Pineiro Quietly Producing a Sound Season
Cardinal starting pitcher Joel Pineiro is having a solid year.
Many outside of Cardinal nation probably have never even heard of Pineiro. However, the Puerto Rico native has been a capable No. 3 starter behind Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright in 2009.
Pineiro moved his record to 14-9 last night as the Cardinals hung out for a 7-6 victory.
The right hander hasn't had this productive of season since his Seattle days several years ago. He recorded 14-7 and 16-11 seasons back-to-back as a Mariner.
This guy can pitch with a solid sinker and help himself with his glove. After so-so success with the Cardinals the last couple years, things are clicking in 2009.
With the help of Pineiro, the Cardinals have a potent starting staff for the playoffs and hopefully beyond.
A free agent at season's end, this guy figures to cash in with a multi-year contact for big bucks.
It's a pretty good story for a pitcher who was designated for assignment by Boston in the not-too-distant past.
