For the second time in the past three weeks, the Boston Red Sox are the top team in baseball, according the RealClearSports Power Rankings. The polls average together rankings from other sites, including ESPN and CBS Sports, to produce the least arbitrary power rankings on the web.
In the latest results, Boston took over first place, jumping up from third, a spot that is now occupied by the Cubs. The Tampa Bay Rays are now second. Read that sentence again. In just six weeks, the Rays have moved-up 21 spots. The biggest fall thus far is the Brewers, who were considered the second-best team in baseball on April 15th. They now find themselves ranked 22nd.
Between the two leagues, it's the N.L. that has the advantage (a departure from the norm over the past few years), with six teams in the top ten. However, the Senior Circuit also has seven of the bottom 10 slots -- the A.L. is chock-full of mediocre teams, apparently. Also, based on these latest rankings, the N.L. West is far and away the worst division in baseball: the Rockies, Giants and Padres rank 27th, 28th and 30th, respectively.
