Doctors recommend that the average person consumes roughly 2,000 calories each day. Michael Phelps is not your average person.
During (yet another) behind-the-scenes look at Phelps' life, it was revealed that he eats 8,000-10,000 calories per day; when you swim 50 miles each week, in addition to extra cardio and weightlifting, you need your energy.
So how does an Olympic legend, and one of the greatest athletes ever, start his day? From NBC's Bob Costas last night, reading from Phelps' autobiography, Beneath the Surface (via Simon on Sports):
- Three sandwiches of fried eggs, cheese, lettuce, tomato, fried onions and mayonnaise,Forget Wheaties -- that's a true breakfast of champions.
- One omelet
- Bowl of grits
- Three slices of french toast with powdered sugar
- Three chocolate chip pancakes
