This story is barely sports related, but there are so many awesome elements that are on the border of being sports-related that I had to let everyone know about it. They’re trying to resurrect The Karate Kid franchise.
How is it sports related? Well, aside from the facts that Bill Simmons falls asleep to this movie every night and karate is a sport, the new franchise also is set to star the brother of an “athlete” (who's also the son of a famous actor) - it's Will's Smith son, Jaden Smith. His brother, Trey, is a WR on the JV team at Oaks Christian and catches passes from Wayne Gretzky’s son. You might remember Jaden from “The Pursuit Of Happyness” or you might not remember him from the television show “All Of Us." From Variety:
Columbia Pictures is back in the dojo with a new version of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid," which has been refashioned as a star vehicle for Jaden Smith. But Jaden is just 10 years old! How can he take down Johnny? Even if he could do the crane, he probably couldn’t even reach a normal adult’s head. I assume this movie is going to be awful but maybe if they include a sweet training montage to the musical stylings of Joe Esposito, it might not be too terrible.
The script is being written by Chris Murphy, and the film will shoot next year in Beijing and other cities. While the new film will be set in that exotic locale, it will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor.
