Outsourcing of US jobs has increased tremendously since the 1980’s with many tech jobs outsourced to India. RealClearWorld recently enlightened us to the problem of pirates. Well, what happens when these two problems are combined? The Pirates are outsourcing their pitching to India! A California sports management company created a reality TV show in India called “Million Dollar Arm”. The show would reward a contestant with $1 million if they could throw 85 mph or faster. Although no one won the million, Rinku Singh made $100,000 and Dinesh Patel got $2,500 and both were brought to the United States to work with a pitching coach. They then got to show their stuff in front of 30 MLB scouts.
The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Patel hit 90 mph on the radar gun during his tryout, and the 6-2, 195-pound Singh topped out at 84 mph. Each has thrown harder during workout sessions that weren't attended by scouts.
On Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates signed the two prospects to free agent contracts. I guess the Pirates are willing to try anything after giving up the second most runs in the league last year. The two men are learning English largely by watching ESPN's Baseball Tonight. When asked how they think they will do the men said, "We will touch 'em all with our web gems. That's nasty!"
