We are officially in the midst of baseball's free agent period, which means you should get ready for some insane amounts of money to be thrown around. One team that plans to do some of that cash-chucking is the New York Yankees (shocking, I know). And don't look now, but they're actually going to have even more money than usual. Due to some contracts ending, they'll have over $80 million to spend, plus added revenue from the new stadium opening up next season.
According to Buster Olney, their number-one target right now is CC Sabathia, and money is really no object.
The deal they will offer Sabathia will be for more than the present-day value of [Johan Santana's] $20.5 million per year, and it will be worth more than the $137.5 million, with deferrals included. The Yankees' first offer will be for something in the range of $140-$142 million ... Folks with other teams don't know how Sabathia possibly can turn down the Yankees' offer.
And that's just the beginning.
...[R]egardless of whether the Yankees sign [Sabathia] or not, their intention is to plow ahead and pursue other pitchers, as well. If they can sign Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, they will do so. If they can sign Sabathia and Derek Lowe, they will do it. If they can sign Burnett and Lowe, they will do it. If they can sign Sabathia and Burnett and Lowe, they will do it. If they can sign Sabathia, Burnett and Andy Pettitte, they will do that. They have the room to themselves, and their choices will largely dictate what leftovers will remain for others to choose from.Well then.
For the record, Olney officially predicts that Sabathia and A.J. Burnett will end-up with the Yanks, Teixeira will stay with the Angles and Manny will sign with the...Nationals?
This should be an interesting off-season.
