Deriba Merga beat out 26,385 other runners to win the 113th running of the Boston Marathon today, finishing in a time of 2:08:42. (That's a mile-pace of 4:55, which means Merga basically sprinted for 26.2 miles. Fun.) Merga, from Ethiopia, earned $150,000 in what was his first ever Boston win. He also won the Houston Marathon earlier this year in January, in a course-record 2:07:52.
Daniel Rono of Kenya finished second (2:09:32) and American's Ryan Hall took third (2:09:40). A runner from the USA has not won Boston since 1983.
On the women's side, Kenya's Salina Kosgei took first (2:32:16), while Kara Goucher earned America another third-place finish (2:32:25).
