Over the weekend Juventus hosted Inter Milan in a Serie A match and played them to a 1-1 draw. During the game, Juventus fans showered Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli with racist taunts, often shouting, "A black Italian does not exist" at him. Balotelli was born in Italy to Ghanian parents and is an Italian citizen and member of their U-21 national team. Racism is not new to Italian soccer, but this crossed the line, and a swift and harsh punishment was needed.
The punishment for Juventus? A stadium ban, which is to say, no fans are allowed to their next match. I can't even imagine the outrage if any US pro team was forced to play in an empty stadium – except of course for the Pirates, who do it every day – but I can't say it was not deserved.
There are also rumors that Balotelli will try to leave Inter after this season: I'm sure the extreme racism he faces in Italy will help make his decision a bit easier.
