Yes, it was announced today that the ogre-ish, sometimes nonsensical, but much beloved NBC football analyst John Madden has decided to hang up the microphone and retire from broadcasting. Over Madden's 30 years of broadcasting, he has won a ridiculous 16 Emmys for Outstanding Sports Analyst/Personality.
This surely means football will see a drop in the use of the telestrator and less references to tailgating and stadium foods. And sadly, no more Madden Bus. Also, we will miss out on gems like, "In order for this team to win the game, the QB has to throw the ball" and, "Here's a guy who can use his arms and legs at the same time."
I assume that his popular Madden video game will continue to be made and bring Madden millions of dollars. No word yet on who his replacement on Sunday Night Football will be, or if they will just replace Madden with Frank Caliendo doing his impression.
UPDATE: Madden has issued a statement.
DOUBLE UPDATE: Chris Collinsworth has been named his successor
