Yesterday, 27-year-old Daniel Jimeno Romero was gored in the neck, heart, and lungs during the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, when a bull got separated from the pack and attacked Romero. As a one-time runner myself, this makes me realize just how crazy the running of the bulls can be.
On the one hand it makes me think, “Holy crap! That is crazy, why did I ever do that? No way I’d do it again.” But at the same time, it makes me think, “Wow, that was dangerous, and thus makes it cooler that I did it. I’m pretty awesome.”
While this particularly gruesome death makes the Running of the Bulls seem particularly dangerous, it marks the first death since 1995, totaling two fatalities in fourteen years; it raises the total number of victims since 1924 to fifteen. Probably just about on par with attending a soccer match.
There is video here if you care to watch. I do not.
