I'm not referring to the horse collar specialist, or the often maligned wide receiver; instead I am speaking of the "humble," "beloved," "kind," "caring," "compassionate," "friendly" and "classy" coach of the UNC Tarheels.
In Saturday, in the midst of blowing out Presbyterian, Williams decided not only to run the Presbyterian team out of the building, but also their fan. With only six minutes remaining, a man sitting several rows behind the Carolina bench had the audacity to yell during a Deon Thompson free throw attempt. Roy Williams took it upon himself to point out the fan to security, who moments later was escorted out of the building. What did this crazy rambunctious fan yell? Probably something pretty offensive. Turns out he yelled "Hey Deon, don't miss it."
WHOA, you're right Roy: get that wild man out of there.
UNC's Sports Information Director Steve Kirschner responded to the charge that Williams asked for the fan to be removed by saying:
"First, Coach Williams didn't tell security to throw the guy out of the building," Kirschner wrote. "He asked security to see if that guy had a ticket for that seat because he wanted to know who gave him the ticket to a seat behind our bench. Security tossed him because he appeared to be intoxicated and our security (and Duke's, Maryland's NC State's and pretty much anyone else's security staffs) eject fans if they think they are."
Ok, fine, even if that is true, it's still completely unnecessary. The coach of a team shouldn't have complete control over who fills every seat in their arena. After UNC beat Michigan State earlier this year, coach Williams made comments in which he said he was upset with Tarheel fans for not supporting them enough in games against smaller teams.
So there are two options for what happened here. One, Williams asked for this fan to be removed for having the audacity to cheer for a team other than UNC. Or two, Williams was so upset about UNC fans not selling out the Dean Dome for every game, that when he saw a fan of another team in the stadium he had to know what UNC ticket holder was so disrespectful as to allow a Presbyterian fan into the Dean Dome.
Oh, and what was Roy's reaction to all this?
"I don't think anybody should yell anything negative at our players. Period. Let's don't make it a bigger thing than it is. But I just don't think anybody should yell negative things toward our players (when) you come in on our tickets to watch our game.
Yes, lets not overreact, by say, getting furious at someone for yelling "Hey, Deon, don't miss it." Roy -- relax. Your team has plenty of fan support; economic troubles may have made buying tickets for home games against nobody teams a little bit less of an intriguing option than in years past, but get over it. Fans of other teams will sometimes travel to watch their team play, and sometimes they'll yell things.
Of course nothing is being made of this because he is Roy Williams and everyone loves him. But, as mentioned, if this was Coach K, everyone would be up in arms about it, calling him a jerk, and Duke overprivileged. But no, it's Roy Williams and UNC, so it's great and he's showing passion, not being a jerk.
What is Roy going to do if there is a Duke fan sitting 20 rows behind his bench yelling typical Duke fan things? Kick him out? Have him roughed up? Shoot his dog?
