Blackhawks Remain No. 1 in NHL Power Ranking Averages

nhl jan 12.pngThe RCS NHL Power Ranking Averages combine six other sites' power rankings to make the most balanced and unbiased grade possible, and to offer the most accurate look at the state of the NHL on a weekly basis.

The Chicago Blackhawks remain the top team in the RCS NHL Power Ranking Averages for the third consecutive week. Entering the top ten this week are the red hot Canucks, who shot up from 12th to 6th this week.

The two teams with the most disparity in their rankings are the Canadiens and the Thrashers. The Canadiens (17th overall) are ranked as high as 10th by TSN, and as low as 21st by Fox. The other four ranking sites all have Montreal between 16th and 18th. The Thrashers meanwhile (25th overall), are ranked as high as 17th overall by FanHouse and as low as 28th by CBS and Sports Illustrated. The reason for the inflated ranking from FanHouse is simple, this week they ranked teams according to goal differential and nothing else, where the Thrashers are a respectable -5, but they have only won one of their last ten contests, explaining the low ranking from the rest of the sites.

At the bottom, the Oilers spend their second week as the 30th ranked team, and seem headed for a unanimous hold on that placement, perhaps by next week, if they keep up their current pace (one win in their last 12 games).
