The Phillies signed slugger Ryan Howard to a five-year, $125 million (good for the second-highest salary in all of baseball behind A-Rod) deal today, ensuring that geeks everywhere will never get to see the Pujols for Howard blockbuster that sent shockwaves through their fantasy league happen in real life.
Howard is a bona fide stud, so there shouldn't be many concerns from Phillie Nation. Where there are, they probably center around around Howard's age (30) and relative value. He's a home run machine (four straight years with 45+), but also a strikeout machine (four straight years with 180+). Then again, he's a ferocious, consistent hitter untainted by the steroid era. So, there shouldn't be any concerns about a Big Papi-like drop-off.
Second, by all accounts he's a hard worker and a mature guy, meaning he's not going to fall victim to Adrian Beltre Syndrome.
For my money, it's a good decision. But, Phillie fan or not, chime in and let me know what you think. Is Howard worth the second-highest salary in baseball?
