No Clear Top Team in NFL Power Rankings

nfl week 5.jpg

The RCS NFL Power Ranking Averages combine eight other sites' power rankings to make the most balanced and unbiased grade possible, and to offer the most accurate look at the state of the NFL on a weekly basis.

It appears there is a lot of uncertainty when it comes to the top team in the NFL. The Jets took over the top spot in the RCS NFL Power Ranking Averages, narrowly edging out the Ravens, but four teams received the top ranking from at least one of the eight sites used in the RCS Averages. Perhaps the most confusing of these top teams is the Packers, who were ranked first by NFL.com, but were placed all the way down at 11th by FanHouse. Another top team the experts seem to be in complete disagreement about is the Falcons, ranked second by CBS and ranked 12th by both FanHouse and Sporting News.

One thing that everyone seems to agree upon is the bottom of the rankings, where the Bills reaffirmed their status as the unanimously 32nd ranked team.

One odd trend in the rankings is the movement of teams who just had their bye week. The Chiefs moved up four spots from 14th to 10th and the Cowboys three, 16th to 13th, despite not playing anyone last week. At the same time the Bucs, who were also idle, fell three spots from 20th to 23rd. I'm not sure how one team's bye week performance can be more impressive than another's, but apparently that was the case this week. More than anything this curious movement was reflective of a lot of the lower ranked teams winning, forcing the Bucs down, and the top ranked teams losing, forcing the Cowboys and Chiefs up.

The big climbers up the ranking this week, moving up six spots each were the Redskins who rose from 23rd to 17th and the Giants who went from 22nd to 16th. Moving down this week were the Eagles who fell from 12th to 20th thanks in part to their loss to the Redskins and in part due to the injuries to Michael Vick and LeSean McCoy.

Divisional Average Rankings:
1. AFC North - 12.57
2. AFC South - 13.78
3. AFC East - 14.41
4t. NFC South - 15.94
4t. NFC North - 15.94
6. NFC East - 16.91
7. AFC West - 17.32
8. NFC West - 25.13

With the Ravens ascension up the rankings and the Colts slipping thanks to their loss to the Jags, the AFC North is now the top rated division according the RCS Averages. At the bottom of the rankings the AFC West pulled closer to pushing the once vaunted NFC East down to seventh, but the NFC West proved once again that it is no contest for which division is the worst. The top ranked team in the NFC West this week is the Rams, ranked 22nd.
