Lions and Bills Shoot Up Power Rankings

nfl week 4.pngThe only thing clear in the NFL Power Ranking Averages is that the Packers are the top team, receiving unanimous number one rankings across the board. After that it's anybody's guess. The Saints are clearly the second highest rated team, but Pete Prisco at CBS still has them as his 8th ranked team. The Patriots stay near the top, slipping from 2nd to 4th after losing to the upstart Bills. Speaking of the Bills, they, along with the Lions moved into the top 10 for the first time since power rankings have been used by anyone anywhere in the world.

It's funny that the Lions and Bills sky rocketed up the rankings when both were about as close as one can be from losing a game. I'm not saying they shouldn't be ranked where they are, but imagine if the Vikings had won in OT instead of the Lions; Detroit would probably be down in the middle of the pack. As is, both teams won and the Lions moved up six spots from 11th to 5th and the Bills moved up eight, from 14th to 6th. The Lions even received one ranking of 2nd (from CBS). The Raiders were the other team to make a big move, rising from 19th to 12th thanks to their win over the Jets.

The three teams dropping the most spots in the rankings are the Eagles, Falcons and Bears. The Bears fell from 12th to 19th, the Eagles slipped from 9th down to 17th, and the Falcons dropped from 8th to 16th.

A winning record doesn't guarantee a good ranking. Not all 2-1 teams are respected within the rankings with the Browns (21st) and 49ers (20th) ranked below 1-2 teams such as the Bears (19th), Eagles (17th), and Falcons (16th).

Divisional Average Rankings:
1. AFC East - 11.91
2. NFC North - 13.22
3. NFC South - 13.75
4. NFC East - 14.16
5. AFC North - 14.25
6. AFC West - 19.54
7. AFC South - 20.47
8. NFC West - 24.72

The AFC East keeps a pretty strong hold on the top spot with three teams in the top eight overall. In fact three divisions hold seven of the top eight ranked teams with three in the AFC East, two in the NFC North, and two in the AFC North. Despite the strength at the top of the AFC North, they still rank 5th overall thanks to the bottom half of the division. The opposite of the AFC North is the NFC East, where all four teams are within seven spots from the Cowboys at 11th to the Eagles at 17th. Thanks to the emerging Raiders the AFC West division has moved past the increasingly inept AFC South. And of course, the NFC West is still bringing up the rear.
