Week 1 NFL Power Ranking Averages
As the NFL season is set to start a bevy of experts are ready to unleash their opinions and predictions in the form of power rankings. Since it's the beginning of the season (or really, just because it's football) the rankings can be fairly divergent from one source to the next. The RCS Power Ranking Averages attempt to take the unkempt mass of power rankings from across the web and organize them in one simple list.
In at least one area, the various rankers agree - the Packers are number one. After winning the Super Bowl the Packers return most of their roster plus some stars that spent much of last season on injured reserve. After the Packers things get tight as there appear to be a clear top nine teams, but no clear order among them.
There are many teams whom the rankers disagree wildly on, including the Chargers, Cowboys, Colts and Texans among the higher ranked teams. Rankings for the Colts are understandably all over the place as no one knows what to make of the Peyton Manning situation, as they are ranked as high as 9th by ESPN and as low as 18th by ProFootballTalk. The teams with the most discrepancy in their rankings are the Jaguars, Dolphins, Brown, and Seahawks with the Browns and Seahawks rankings being comically all over the place.
At the bottom of the rankings once again everyone agrees as the Bengals and Panthers are each ranked 31st or 32nd by six of the seven ranking sites.
1. NFC South - 13.0
2. NFC North - 13.68
3. NFC East - 14.68
4. AFC East - 15.93
5. AFC North - 16.57
6. AFC South - 17.75
7. AFC West - 18.39
8. NFC West - 22.0
With three teams in the top ten, the NFC South is expected to be the strongest division, followed by the NFC North and East. While the NFC has the three strongest divisions it also has by far the weakest in the West. The NFC West's best team, the Rams, has an average ranking of 18.29 only slightly higher than the average ranking of the next worst division (AFC West). So it's safe to say that the entire NFL world is expecting a poor showing from the NFC West yet again.
Of course, all of this is just speculation until the first game kicks off on Thursday.
