Countdown to Opening Day: 51 team triples

John-Buck-Triple.jpgAs we slog through the time that's sandwiched between the end of football and the start of baseball, I'll be counting down the days until Opening Day with a countdown of random Royals-related numbers. Most of them mean nothing - this isn't supposed to be a groundbreaking series of research - but they'll hopefully make the days go faster until Opening Day.

51 Days = 51 Royals triples in 2009

The Royals tripled 51 times in 2009, more than any other team in the Majors, and a whopping 11 more than the next-highest American League total.

The Twins were 2nd in triples, so apparently tripling is one of The Little Things that Minnesota Always Does Right (TM).

David DeJesus led the Royals with 9 triples, followed by Alberto Callaspo and Willie Bloomquist with 8 apiece. And somehow, two Royals catchers led all Major League catchers in the category: Miguel Olivo came in first with five, and John Buck had four. Why not, right?

51 was also the number of doubles Billy Butler hit last season.
