Things...are not quite right here, so all my stuff will now be at mindahaas.net. In fact, I already started posting there - like this collection of wonderful fan reactions to yesterday's Scott Podsednik trade.

My goal is to never ever ever ever have to move the blog again, which is why I bought a domain instead of joining yet another blog network. Please poke around at the new site, and be sure to check out the photography page, where I've collected all of my Royals and O-Royals photos from the past year and a half.

And of course, there's a handy orange RSS button up in the upper-right corner over there, so please be sure to subscribe.

Farewell and good luck to Real Clear Sports and all the bloggers here. I sincerely hope it works out better for all of you than it has for me. And go Royals!
I pretty much wanted to punch every face I came across for the first hour or so I was there. Don't ask why - it was one of those dumb days where all the petty stupid stuff piles up into one big heap of frowns.

I hope nobody noticed, though. O-Royals fans pay money (though not THAT much) to get into the ballpark, and the last thing any of them (you?) need is for some promotions chick to be frowning all night. But at some point tonight it hit me: I have no right to ever - EVER - be grumpy at this job.

What was it that finally got to me? Maybe it was the little girl with the red, white and blue hair bow and a hot dog in her hand singing along to the National Anthem even though no one else in her row was singing. Or perhaps it was the two ladies I met who are best friends now because their husbands happened to get assigned to coach the same Little League team four years ago. Or the little boy who got to announce an inning over the PA, blasting through his shaky nerves to confidently bellow out the name of his favorite Royals player.

None of that stuff happened on the field, but that's baseball, you know? The players and the fans and the perfect summer weather and the vendors and everyone else - it all comes together in the most spectacular way possible. Some combination of all those things made my bad mood melt away throughout the Royals double-header - a split against Albuquerque - but I think most of the happy moments came from the fans.

*********
A dugout story about Kila Ka'aihue
I've never been sure how hard I should try to "convert" casual fans into actual O-Royals devotees, because really, fans should be allowed to enjoy the ballpark in whatever way they choose. But I do always like to ask little kids one question: Do you have a favorite player?

Predictably, a lot of young'uns around here adore Alex Gordon. A few really love Irving Falu, probably because of a high five or an autograph he gave them, and a few always pick whoever's hitting home runs that week. (Scott Thorman has a lot of little fans this weekend, for example.)

But if a kid doesn't have a favorite player yet, I shamelessly steer them toward MY favorite: Ka'aihue, of course. Before the first game today, a four-year-old kid was brought on to the field to bring the lineup card to home plate with manager Mike Jerschele. Before Jirsch was ready, I was chatting with the kid while we waited next to the dugout. Kila was a few feet away, prepping his bats for the game ahead. And embarrassingly enough, he heard me say to the tiny child: "And do you know who THAT is?"

The kid solemnly shook his head, no. I told him, "He could be your favorite player. He's one of the best hitters you'll ever see here." Kila whipped his head toward me and smiled - I think it was a smile, anyway - and shook his head violently. I'm not sure who he'd suggest is better, though. Hopefully the little kid was paying attention when Kila, that bastion of modesty, blasted a 2-run homer in the 4th inning.

***********
Nuts 'n' bolts: The actual games
The Royals split the twinbill with the Isotopes, but the win pushed Omaha into a tie for first place - they had been a game and a half back from the Memphis Redbirds, who've lost two straight.

GAME ONE
Philip Humber gave up two dingers that put the Isotopes out to a lead they never surrendered. Disco Hayes had a rough sixth inning that added two more to 'Querque's total. Hayes rebounded with a gorgeous 8-pitch 7th inning, but the Royals were in a hole.

Omaha scored a token run in the bottom of the 7th (the final inning because this was a DH), but nothing came from it other than a later start to the 2nd game.

Alex Gordon doubled, Irving Falu tripled, and Kila Ka'aihue homered in the game. Ed Lucas drew the Royals' only walk.

GAME TWO:
Charlie Haeger's knuckleball fooled some Omaha hitters - he struck out Irving Falu twice, which you know if you follow Falu is a big deal. He's tough to strike out. But other Royals, and some shoddy Isotope defense and catching, sullied Haeger's night and led to three Omaha runs against him. Jai Miller homered off Ramon Troncoso to lead off the 6th, which gave the Royals a one-run lead that they would hold to the end.

Federico Casteneda was decent enough on the mound, but the real story, somehow, was Matt Herges, who pitched 2.2 fantastic innings to slam the door on Albuquerque.

POSTGAME:
Fireworks! Awesome!
After the eternal CWS-induced road trip, the Royals were back in town for just two games last weekend, then immediately hit the road again for a series at New Orleans. After this weekend's series, it's the All Star break and then another 8-game road trip.

In other words, home games this month are at a premium, but if you plan well you can see a lot of baseball. How? The Royals are playing THREE doubleheaders at home this month - tomorrow, the 24th and the 25th. As far as I know, we're not emptying the stadium between games, so if you're looking for a weekend with a LOT of baseball, this weekend or the 23rd-26th would be ideal.

And of course, if the rumors are true, you'll get to see what Mike Moustakas can do at the Triple-A level during at least some of those games. It may not be this weekend - although I've got my fingers crossed that it is - but Moustakas' moving here is imminent. And why not? There is not a single thing he still needs to "prove" at NWArk, and it would do the organization a lot of good to show that one of GMDM's top draft picks can make progress and become a star. It has to be agonizing for a new-ish GM to wait for his first draft pick to make the Majors. And as we know, Dayton Moore is still waiting.

It's likely that Moustakas will be that first guy for Moore, and that Omaha fans will get to see him soon.

Per Kevin McNabb, here are this weekend's pitching matchups.

Thur., 7:05 p.m.: RH Jesus Castillo (0-2, 12.86) vs. RH Gaby Hernandez (5-5, 6.10)

Fri., 5:30 p.m.: RH Seth Etherton (2-2, 4.84) vs. RH Philip Humber (4-4, 4.38)

Fri., Gm. 2: TBA vs. TBA

Sat., 7:05 p.m.: LH Alberto Bastardo (3-0, 3.23) vs. RH Manauris Baez (1-1, 4.79)

Sun., 1:35 p.m.: RH James McDonald (5-1, 4.74) vs. RH Bryan Bullington (6-1, 2.85)

Remember that MiLB double-headers are 7-inning games, so the 2nd game tomorrow will likely be pitched by committee for both teams, depending on how much of each bullpen gets used in the first game.

My day and my celebration were built around that game, and everything would be dampened if the ORoyals had lost.

And thanks to a trio of ORoyals home runs - capped by a Rick Ankiel walkoff winner! - I got my wish and had a smile on my face as I settled in to watch the postgame fireworks show. At one point, there was a flurry of fireworks that drowned out the music, but in the briefest of pauses before the next round of booms, all I could hear was:

"America, America, God shed his grace on thee...."

...yep. God bless America, and happy Independence Day.

*****************

One thing that minorly soured my celebration - Edwin Bellorin was traded during the game. He's not the greatest of players - he can NOT hit - but I've come to love having him around. The dude has one of those infectious smiles that I can't help but love. But with Manny Pina's imminent callup to Omaha, one of our catchers had to be the odd man out, and it happened to be Bellorin. He left for Round Rock before the fireworks even started.

Before the game - and hence, before the trade - Bellorin made some comment about my (extremely douchey, I know) patriotic stunner shades. I let him wear them, and he didn't give them back until after the game. So, as a fond farewell to Bellorin, here's a picture of that:

It's my town, and it's often called "the center of the baseball universe" during this month. I haven't been to any games yet, actually, but I've been working and more importantly, soaking up the CWS atmosphere while it's still intact in its Rosenblatt-centered glory.

13th Street is a hoot, in particular. I've had the pleasure of working in a tent right next to Zesto's, where the crowds are constant and happy, and the employees are great fun. Our other tent, located near the front gates, has been great as well. Chit-chatting with family members of players and coaches has been fascinating. I'm not sure how much is bloggable - I didn't mention that I blog, and I don't usually post stuff from conversations without the other person being aware of what's up. But it's glorious to see how proud all the family members are. I especially liked the father of a catcher; he had so much pride and love in his eyes when he was talking about his son. He was eager to boast - in an adorable fatherly way - about his son's success, and stayed and talked to us about him for quite a while.

Family is a big part of the College World Series experience. It's a time when a lot of young kids figure out that they really love baseball. A coworker took her 6-year-old son to a game, and the kid was, for the first time, more interested in the game on the field than in finding stuff to do away from the field. That kid, with the CWS as his springboard, is going to grow up to be a great baseball fan.

A little boy in South Carolina didn't get that chance. Bayler Teal was 7, just old enough to be getting into baseball in that splendid way that the game grips all of us, but he died of cancer last week. The South Carolina team, moved by his two-year battle, dedicated their series to his memory. The Gamecocks are playing in the championship series, and Bayler's family wants to come to Omaha see the team that the little guy loved so much.

Because this is the age where generosity is easier than turning away from people in need, I wouldn't be surprised if total strangers covered ever penny of the Teals' trip to Omaha. A bank in Bishopville, SC, has an account set up. But for generous baseball fans who don't live out there, Travis Haney, who covers the Cocks for The Post and Courier, will pass along donations made to his PayPal account (his e-mail address is HERE). All he asks is that you mention that it's for Bayler's family so that the money gets to the right place.

Most of you reading this are Midwesterners, and the thing about Midwesterners is that we care about people and we love our baseball. For this family, we can combine those two things and make the final CWS at Rosenblatt special for more reasons than it already is. Go Cocks.
Tonight in Des Moines, Ed Lucas fell just a double shy of the cycle and drove in five runs. It was only the 2nd time in his career that he's homered and tripled in the same game - the other one was July 24, 2008.

The O-Royals ended up losing 8-7 to the I-Cubs. After the Royals put up 4 runs in the first inning (three of which came on a Lucas home run), Gaby Hernandez coughed up the lead, and thensome. By the time Hernandez's day was done, he had given up seven runs, all earned. The Royals clawed back, thanks to a 2-run triple from Lucas.

David Lough, by the way, doubled and homered tonight as well. But the bats weren't enough to hold off the I-Cubs. Blaine Hardy was brought in to hold the tie in the 8th. Around the Kansas City game and College World Series shenanigans, I never did hear if anyone was warming up, but Hardy threw a lot of pitches. He really faltered in the 9th, and could not get out of it. Iowa won, 8-7.

Other tidbits from tonight:
Scott Thorman and Kila Ka'aihue each walked 3 times.
Matt Herges struck out two in his perfect inning of work.
The two home runs Hernandez gave up were in the same inning. The two doubles he gave up were back-to-back. Crap happens in pairs, I guess?

The loss drops the O-Royals out of first place; Nashville has now taken the lead. More about the divisional standings tomorrow...tonight, it's time to go to bed so I can wake up for some <strike>jingoism</strike> soccer. U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
What follows has absolutely nothing to do with baseball. Sorry.

When I left my house this morning, I was grumbling to myself about all the people who have door-dinged my car and not done anything about it. In fact, ALL of the people who have ever door-dinged me - at least one on all four doors - have failed to do the responsible thing. Grumble grumble.

Anywho, I went on some errands, including putting gas in my treasured Taurus. Seriously, I love that car. A few minutes later, the gas I had just paid for was trickling down the street, dripping out of the crumpled remains of my car. Someone had run a red light, and I tried to stop, but I hit him. Both airbags deployed, and my driver door was kind of hard to force open, but my phone stayed in its place in my lap so I was able to call 911.

A Jimmy Johns driver with a flowing mohawk, a kindly lady in a nearby office building, and an attorney happened to witness the wreck, and no one disputed that the other guy was at fault. Hooray! Everyone was super nice to me, too. And I got to ride home in the back of a cop car! Just like a perp!

I'm physically OK, I guess. There happened to be an ambulance nearby, and they are required to stop at the scene of an accident, I guess? They checked me out before the police and fire department even got there, and all was well. Here's what's left of my car.

So...that happened. Again, I'm fine, although I did just find a small piece of glass in my mouth. That was...unexpected. Now it's time for the Royals game. I really hope they win.
As you probably know, he O-Royals are doing pretty well; if they win their series against Nashville this weekend, they'll move into first place. And the roster boasts quite a few players that you could vote for without feeling TOO foolish. You can get to the AAA ballots here. Let's look at our boys:

Who's on the ballot / why you could vote for him:
Starting pitchers:
Luis Mendoza: Though Mendoza didn't pan out at the big-league level, he's been a reasonably good solution in Omaha's rotation. He's in the upper tier of PCL pitchers as far as limiting walks - he has only walked 6 thus far (1.6 BB/9). Mendoza hardly strikes out anybody, but he keeps the ball on the ground and has been pretty decent. Also, he seems like a very pleasant person.

Bryan Bullington: You know I don't put much stock in ERA, but to have an ERA of 1.92 as a (mostly) starter, you have to be doing something right. Sure enough, Bryan Bullington keeps the ball on the ground and inside the park, and doesn't walk a ton of batters. He also strikes out more per 9 innings than any of his rotation-mates, and hardly ever gives up home runs.

Anthony Lerew's Sideburns: Firstly, Lerew is one of the most entertaining people in baseball, at least among the people I've met. Lerew and Bruce Chen NEED to have a TV show. On the mound, I wish I could say Lerew's among the league leaders in a bunch of stuff, but the truth is, he doesn't strike out a ton of guys, and he walks a pretty average number. He allows roughly a hit per inning, but the thing he does exceptionally well to keep runs off the board is avoid the long ball. Of PCL starters, Lerew's 0.4 HR/9 is one of the best rates.

Philip Humber: Like his teammate Mendoza, Humber is among the very best in the league at limiting walks - he's walked just 1.4 per 9 innings thus far. It's not clear when he'll come back from his facial injury, but he was the workhorse of the staff up to that point. He threw more innings than any other Omaha pitcher, and sports a pretty good SO/BB ratio of 3.91 - that's 20th-best in the league. Not great, but certainly not bad. And come on, how can you not support a guy who took a line drive to the face? Have some compassion!

Relievers:
Blake Wood: Wood didn't pitch enough AAA innings to show up on the baseball-reference leaderboards, but when you look at his numbers, a few things stand out from his time here. Wood is a groundball machine with a 53.8% ground ball rate. And of course, he's been a ray of light for the KC bullpen since his callup a month ago.

Victor Marte: True, Marte walked too many while he was with Omaha, but he kept the walks from being too costly by limiting home runs and striking out a decent number. Most of the hits he gave up were singles, which helped keep his FIP at 3.51.

Greg Holland: Holland is yet another O-Royal who keeps the ball in the park despite the seemingly perpetual wind blowing out at Rosenblatt. (Is it just me, or is it windy less often this year than it has been in the past few years? Maybe it's just me.) Holland's 25 strikeouts is the most in the Omaha pen. [That's Holland pitching on the left there.]

Josh 'Earl' Rupe: Rupe's success in the Majors was a mixed bag, but in Omaha he's among the league leaders in hits/9 - no small feat in a hitter's park like Rosenblatt. Rupe also strikes out more batters per 9 than any of his teammates, and has a killer moustache.

Catcher:
Cody Clark: Oh, um...I have no real way to justify voting in the light-hitting catcher Clark. This is awkward. Let's see: He...doesn't strike out very often?

First base:
Kila Ka'aihue: Homerism aside, there is NO reason to vote for anyone besides Ka'aihue. He's dominating the league - his .487 OBP is 2nd in the league, and the only man ahead of him is teammate Alex Gordon. Though Kila's not mashing homers like he did in 2008, he's still in the Top 10 in slugging and has the 4th-best OPS in the league. And of course, he's walking more than anyone else - his 50 walks lead the league, and the rest of the top 10 (except Jack Cust) have played a TON more games than Hawaiian Punch. If Kila doesn't get in to this game, the whole dang thing is a joke.

(By the way, did you see the beeramid Kila knocked over a few Thirsty Thursdays ago? Check it out.)

Second base:
Irving Falu: Falu is apparently the subject of a FanGraphs-wide mancrush. And why not? He's super fast, and his .310/.355/.367 line is awfully good for an infielder, isn't it? He has logged more PAs than any of his teammates, and more than all but two batters in the entire league.

Further, Falu is a fan's man. Not a day goes by at Rosenblatt that I don't see him going out of his way to dispense baseballs and autographs to young fans. Like one day, there were 4 dozen baseballs sitting by the dugout for the kids who were on the field during the National Anthem. Falu had a rare day off that day, so he got out a Sharpie and signed each and every one of those baseballs. Nobody asked him to do this. In other words: Make your kids become Irving Falu fans.

Marc Maddox: Two of Omaha's 2nd basemen are on the ballot, so vote carefully. Maddox has had periods of struggle in his first season at this level, but has held his own overall. That said, if you're voting for an O-Royal at 2nd base, Falu would probably be a more worthy selection this year. (Not that I don't love Marc. But, y'know, the better of the two should get the votes!)

Shortstop:
Wilson Betemit: Betemit is with the big club now, of course. But while he was here, he was good for about a hit per game, and had a little bit of power as well. In his 29 games here, Betemit put a very respectable .358 OBP.

Third base:
Ed Lucas: Lucas, in addition to just being a nice guy, seems to be able to handle spotty playing time pretty well. Around a few trips to the DL and a crowded infield, Lucas has put up a line of .308/.378/.446. Not too shabby. His OPS is actually one of the best on the team, too.

Outfield:
Jai Miller: Miller has been quite the addition for Omaha since joining the team this spring. As far as I can tell, his defense is quite good, and he's put in time in both center and right. Even though he has to split playing time with like a dozen other outfielders, Miller is still in the top 20 in the league in doubles, and has homered 5 times as well. That adds up to a very nice .500 slugging percentage.

David Lough: My favorite defender - and seriously, he should be your favorite defender too - is also pretty decent at the plate, although his slow start to the year is still dragging down his overall slash stats. In May and June, Lough has hit with a lot more power than he did in April, and is one of the league leaders in triples.

Jordan Parraz: We've looked at what Parraz did to fix his April batting woes. June has been closer to Good-Parraz than Yucky-Parraz. This month hasn't been quite as stunning as May was, but he hasn't been getting as much playing time so that probably has a little to do with it.

DH:
Alex Gordon: Gordon is up there with - or ahead of - Kila Ka'aihue in just about every category. I don't know who else could be voted as the best DH in the league, so just vote Gordon. Seriously, look at this line. .370/.497/.674/1.171.

[Seriously, I wish I could do proper photo captions on this blog. But, like many other seemingly normal features, that doesn't exist here. Anywho - that's Gordon batting. He has a very picturesque swing.]

Scott Thorman: Again, we have two O-Royals vying for one spot. But sadly for Thorman - who despite being a free-swinger is a pretty decent hitter - one option is clearly better than the other. Vote Gordon.

Again, here is the link to the ballot. And of course, if you feel there are better players out there, vote for them instead -- the best players should get the votes, whether they're on your favorite team or not. That said, a lot of our guys are legitimate candidates for the All-Star team, so let's make it happen!

He will make a full recovery."

Hooray!
**********

I recently started working in the gift shop on my days off from on-field duties. Since then, the way I experience Omaha Royals gamedays has changed dramatically. Tending the shop keeps us plenty busy, so I don't have time to watch the games. But today, I was sent forth from the shop and into the stands to sell some koozies. So I saw a few minutes of the game, and what I saw was horrifying.

After striking out Norris Hopper to start the inning, Omaha starter* Philip Humber gave up two doubles, a single and a homer - four runs overall. Then shortstop Luis Cruz came up, and lined Humber's 4th pitch right back to the mound - and into Humber's face. Humber went down immediately, and from where I stood in section B, it looked like he wasn't moving.

*he didn't come in until the 2nd because John Parrish threw the first as part of his rehab stint. But Humber was still essentially the starter. Such is minor league ball.

Pretty much every member of the coaching and training staff sprinted to the mound. The whole Omaha defense came in and gathered near the mound. Cruz paced up and down after the ump called him safe at first. That has to feel horrible.

After a few minutes - during which the stadium felt like a vacuum had sucked out all the air - Humber was helped back to the dugout, and the applause from the 6,000 fans was a heartfelt exhale. Greg Holland took over on the mound, and got out of the inning. Half an inning(ish) later, the between-innings break was extended while a golf cart came in from the left field wall to pick Humber up and take him to a waiting ambulance.

Kevin McNabb wrote on oroyals.com that Humber "was taken to a local hospital suffering from apparent injuries to his mouth."

Someone who was nearby when Humber got on to the cart said there was blood EVERYWHERE, and it looked like maybe there were teeth missing? A teammate described the injury as a "big ass laceration on his cheek."

But as far as the teammate knows, Humber is "okay, at least."
Let's look at how our boys did last month - when the team as a whole compiled a 17-11 record and never lost more than two in a row.

May's monster wins:
The O-Royals had a handful of games in which they not only won, they flat-out destroyed their opponent.

May 11 @ Reno: Omaha won 10-2
Winning pitcher: Gaby Hernandez
Big bats: Marc Maddox and Wilson Betemit each piled up four hits. Betemit drove in four runs. Alex Gordon homered.
Also significant: This was Blake Wood's final game in an Omaha uniform before being called up.

May 15 @ Las Vegas: Omaha won 15-1
Winning pitcher: Luis Mendoza,
Superb relief: Federico Casteneda and Josh Rupe combined for four 1-hit innings
Big bats: Pretty much everyone. Jordan Parraz hit 3 doubles, Gordon doubled twice, Scott Thorman homered. Parraz, David Lough and Irving Falu each had four hits.

May 18 @ Las Vegas: Omaha won 17-5
Winning pitcher: Anthony Lerew, but he was sloppy.
Bullpen stars: Greg Holland and Casteneda combined to allow zero runs in four innings
Big bats: Parraz hit four doubles and a home run. In terms of raw hitting ability, this seems more impressive than a cycle. Falu, Gordon, Jai Miller and Ed Lucas each added three hits.

May 26 vs. Colorado Springs: Omaha won 8-1
Winning pitcher: Mendoza
Relieved by: Matt Herges, Holland and Rupe gave up just one unearned run in their 3 total innings
Big bats: Lough had four hits - if one of his singles had been a double, he would have hit for the cyle - and Parraz had three hits.
Also significant: Kurt Mertins hit his first Triple-A home run.

May 29 vs. Round Rock: Omaha won 9-0
Winning pitcher: Lerew was superb, walking zero and striking out five in his 6 shutout innings.
Big bats: Kila Ka'aihue homered and walked twice. Ed Lucas contributed three hits, including a double.
Also significant: Disco Hayes returned from the *cough* DL, after suffering from what I believe was a case of "taking up too much room on the roster." Lucas also miraculously recovered from a similar ailment on the same day.

May 30 vs. Round Rock: Omaha won 10-2
Winning pitcher: Philip Humber
Big bats: SIX ORoyals homered: Ka'aihue, Gordon, Thorman, Lough, Miller and Lucas. Ka'aihue and Miller also doubled.
Also significant: Omaha pitchers did not walk anyone. More on this in a moment.

What can we learn about the team from their big wins?
1) Lots of ORoyals had excellent months at the plate individually.

We've already looked at most of Jordan Parraz's impressive May. His final line for the month was .353/.500(!!)/.506. Ten of his 30 hits were doubles, but he only homered once. Still, for a guy who was as hacky as Parraz was in April, a .500 OBP over an entire month is astonishing. He's been unstoppable when ahead in the count, so continuing to lay off that first pitch will be critical.

David Lough also improved in his 2nd month at Triple-A, assembling a line of .290/.320/.470 for the month. Lough may not have head-turning speed like fellow prospects Irving Falu or Derrick Robinson, but he's quick enough on the bases to lead the team - and be tied for 2nd in the league - in triples. And as I've gushed about at least a dozen times, his range in the outfield is breathtaking.

Kila Ka'aihue is still here, for some stupid reason. Despite sitting on the KC bench for a while, Kila still leads the PCL in walks - and is just one shy of the International League's top walker, who has played in 15 more games than Kila. Ka'aihue's .503 OBP leads the league by a comfortable margin, although he would have competition in Alex Gordon for the top spot if Gordon had more Triple-A PAs. Ka'aihue's May line was .378/.576/.711.

Batting next to Ka'aihue in the Omaha lineup is Alex Gordon, who would be back up in the Majors quite soon if I were in charge. His May OBP was actually below .500, but overall he's still above that mark. It's just insulting to keep him here much longer - he's athletic enough to physically play the outfield, and seems to be learning the mental parts of it quite speedily. Gordo's May line was .355/.496/.667.

It's fun for fans, and probably Mike Jirschele, to have Kila and Gordon batting back-to-back, but it's stupid that they're both here. It doesn't take much investigation of the Major League roster to find places where these guys would be an upgrade.

2) Not walking people = WIN WIN WIN
The ORoyals staff went on a streak of 20+ innings where they walked nobody - including that 14-inning win last Friday. Matt Herges finally broke the streak on Saturday, but it's no coincidence that the team is doing well overall while its pitching staff is best in the league at avoiding the free pass. In addition to Friday, the staff had three other games where they walked nobody, and just 70 of their league-lowest 129 total walks came in the month of May. (Yes, that's more than half of their total, but they played six more games in May than in April.)

I would like to reiterate that the Omaha Royals are leading the league with the fewest walks surrendered (and has a league-leading WHIP to go with it!). The next-closest team has 11 more than they do, and the next-closest within our division has 23 more. I believe this will be significant if the divisional race continues to be as tight as it is.

Despite being one of the worst teams in the league at giving up home runs, Omaha still ranks in the top four in fewest earned runs allowed. Imagine how good this staff could be if they'd keep the ball in the park!

Also, the ORoyals are dead last in the league in strikeouts. As we all know, if you can't strike batters out, you'd sure as heck better not be putting them on base via walks.

Wow, this post got rambly in a hurry. I'll focus on some more individual performers soon, and probably rant about Gordon and Ka'aihue some more. And Federico Casteneda deserves some kind of recognition, so he'll get his own post soon too.

Which of the ORoyals impressed YOU the most in May?

Sunday before the O-Royals took the field against the Salt
Lake Bees, I sat near the Omaha
dugout and got the camera ready for the game. Next to me was a little girl,
maybe 5 years old, collecting Royals autographs. As each new player came toward
her perch at the end of the dugout, she'd look up at her dad and ask, "Do I
have him already?"

The little girl was especially excited to get Jordan
Parraz's autograph, because her name is also Jordan. So when Parraz came toward
the dugout after stretching out in the outfield, the girl called out to him: "Jordan! Jordan! Will
you sign my autograph?"

Parraz paused, then smiled. "Sign your autograph?"

He did sign for her, of course, amidst chuckles from the
girl's parents and the teammates who heard. No word on whether he signed his
autograph or hers, though.

*******

Now, on to the meat:

Jordan Parraz is not a disciplined hitter. If you've watched
him for even one game, odds are good that you've noticed his free-swinging
ways. A running joke among people who watch Omaha often is that Parraz swinging at the
first pitch is as certain as death and taxes. Whether he's leading off an
inning or up with the bases loaded, it seems that he's ready to hack at
whatever is thrown at him.

Because he's my irrational favorite player, and because I
have way too much time on my hands (sort of), I decided to see exactly how true
that little truism really is.

In the month of April, Parraz had 54 plate appearances. He
swung at the first pitch 26 times, which is kind of astounding. Seventeen plate appearances were decided
on the first pitch - or, in other words, on an 0-0 count. That's a 31.5% chance
that the pitcher won't have to throw a second pitch to Parraz. He only reached base on two of those - a
single and an error. There was a sac fly in there somewhere too, but still.

Seventeen out of 54 plate appearances. Good lord.

Perhaps more incredibly, Parraz only saw a 3-ball count
three times in the entire month of April. He walked on two of those occasions,
and struck out in the other.

That was April. Jordy-poo has been an almost totally
different hitter in May.

In his 86 PAs so far this month, he has already taken 51
first pitches, including a stretch last week where he took 15 of 17 first
pitches. The number of PAs decided on the first pitch is also way down - 15 so
far this month.

And he's making pitchers throw a lot more this month, too.
He has reached a 3-ball count 20 times, including 13 walks. This month he's had
plate appearances of 10 pitches, 9 pitches, 8 pitches a few times.

Taking just one pitch every now and then has made a massive
difference. I'm not saying Parraz should leave the bat on his shoulder for
every single first pitch. But clearly, being patient enough to take even one
pitch has made opposing pitchers throw him more stuff he can hit - and he can hit, you know.

Let's compare. (Shoot, I hope this table works.)

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>
