James Padgett and Jordan Williams.
Our two freshman bigs may be the only two frontcourt players left when Maryland suits up for its season opener next Friday. How could this have possibly happened?
David Neal: graduated.
Braxton Dupree: transferred.
Jerome Burney: out for season with foot injury.
That we've known for a while. But the recent revelations about Dino Gregory and Steve Goins have turned a precarious frontcourt situation into a potentially catastrophic one. Gregory has violated team rules, and rumors are swirling that he may have engaged in academic dishonesty. If this is true, he could get the Josh Portis punishment: one year of ineligibility. Goins, meanwhile, did not play Tuesday and has been hobbled by inflamed knees in recent months. The 7-foot project had been making great strides in the offseason, especially with his conditioning. But as his workload increased, his knees were continually flaring up. The ultimate fear is that his knees can't withstand long stretches of playing time. Here' the Post's blog entry about Goins.
