Rangers Sneak Away With Shootout Win
Boston, MA- Saturday afternoon, it was the goaltenders that stole the show. Joey MacDonald went save for save with Henrik Lundqvist for a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime. Jaromir Jagr's goal in the third round of the shootout gave the Rangers a 2-1 victory at the TD Banknorth Garden.
The teams battled through a scoreless first period, with Boston outshooting New York 11-8.
In the second period, it was the Bruins that got on the board first just over eight minutes in. Lundqvist attempted to send the puck around the boards, but it got stopped by Shean Donovan. Donovan threw a quick shot on net. Lundqvist scrambled back in time to make the save, but the rebound went right to Marc Savard, who quickly fired it past the diving netminder.
Boston had a chance to double their lead later in the period when Ryan Hollweg was given a major penalty for boarding. Lundqvist stood tall and kept the game 1-0.
Things were looking good for the Bruins as they carried the lead into the late stages of the third period. Jaromir Jagr found Thomas Pock open in the left circle. Pock bobbled the puck, but managed to put a wrist shot past MacDonald on the stick side with just 1:40 left in regulation.
The two teams combined for nine shots in overtime, but couldn't solve the two young goaltenders. The game headed to a shootout.
Michael Nylander and Patrice Bergeron traded goals in the first round, before Matt Cullen and Marco Sturm missed their opportunities in the second round. In the third round, Jaromir Jagr snuck a wrist shot through MacDonald's legs to put the Rangers up 2-1. That left it up to the Bruins shootout hero, Phil Kessel. Kessel tried to deke Lundqvist to the glove side, but was unable to slide the puck in, and the Rangers came away with the victory.
Defenseman Mark Stuart and forward Petr Kalus were recalled from Providence for the game. Stuart was a plus-1 on the day in 8:25 of ice time. Kalus, in his NHL debut, was kept off the scoresheet, but registered 4:24 of ice time.
