The first of the preseason tournaments tipped off last night, with North Carolina and Syracuse advancing to the final of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Carolina won at Ohio State, an impressive win for a program putting new starters in place. The Tar Heels haven't looked great this season, but given the amount of new personnel, Roy Williams has to be pleased. Ohio State can be pleased with Evan Turner, whose 23 points and 11 rebounds showed he hasn't lost a step as the Big Ten's best player.
Syracuse's 95-73 shellacking of Cal came courtesy of superior shooting from the floor. The Orange shot 57 percent and the 21-14 advantage they held in assists suggest their ball movement was superior as well. Disappointing loss for the Golden Bears who aspire to the top of the Pac-10 in Year Two of the Mike Montgomery Era.
Overall, it's been an interesting
start to the season, with teams like Kentucky, Kansas and Villanova having narrow escapes in games they should've won handily. I hesitate to read too much into that right now, as everybody's just finding their footing. But maybe it's a precursor to an exciting year.
