Welcome to the College Football Notebook! August is just about here and that means it’s time to start previewing football on campuses around the country. We look to be set up for another great season. Tim Tebow is back and loaded for a run at a historic second Heisman Trophy and third national championship at Florida. In Big 12 territory, Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford are still in the house. Around the rest of the country, there’s a hunger for national redemption at Ohio State and around the Big Ten. The Mountain West is coming off a summer in the news, as they aggressively went into the halls of Congress to push their way into the BCS club? Utah, BYU and TCU will get heightened scrutiny on the football field as a result, and we’ll see if the MWC can match its performance of last year.
It was an offseason filled with havoc in Tallahassee, as Bobby Bowden’s legend and legacy came under attack. What impact will this have on his race with Joe Paterno to be the game’s winningest coach? And does either old warrior have the horses for a run at the BCS? Can Notre Dame win its back into the national elite this year, or will Charlie Weis be looking for a new job in December? Will Southern Cal rebuild its defense and will they manage to stay focused for each Pac-10 game?
All these questions and much more are going to be looked at in the Notebook over the next month, as we go careening toward the first games, on Thursday, September 3. Previews, prognostication and picks will be the order of the day here for the next month, and it starts this weekend with the Big East, the first of eight conference/independent previews.
