The Coors Effect

Reinforcements on the way; roster crunch, too

Yorvit Torrealba hit the restricted list today, apparently to take care of some problems back home in Venezuela.  Nobody really knows how long he'll be out, but for the time being the Rockies are going to go with Paul Phillips and Edwin Bellorin behind the plate until Chris Iannetta returns.

Speaking of returns, three Rockies pitchers are about to return: Franklin Morales, Ryan Speier, and Matt Daley are currently out on rehab assignments at Colorado Springs and should be back soon.  That begs the question of what will happen when they're back.

Morales will almost certainly be in the rotation.  Either Jorge de la Rosa or Jason Hammel will move to the bullpen; it's not really clear which one.  We've seen enough of Good Jorge this year to think that the Rockies may keep him in the rotation, but recent results favor Hammel.

The real issue is who will be sent out.  Only one pitcher on the active roster has options remaining -- Manny Corpas.  Corpas, with an ERA over 6, seems likely to be sent out to Colorado Springs soon.  Aside from him, the Rockies might let go of recent callups Randy Flores and Joel Peralta -- but neither has done much of anything to deserve being sent down.  Jason Grilli and Alan Embree have, but Embree's $2.25 million contract could prevent the Rockies from doing anything with him.
