The Coors Effect

Roster moves: EY2 recalled, Hawpe likely to DL

Nothing's official yet, but Troy Renck is reporting that Eric Young Jr. has joined the Rockies in Denver.  More than likely, Brad Hawpe will be placed on the disabled list with a quad injury.

Young was hitting .228/.302/.298 in Colorado Springs -- not a good line, but hurt considerably by a 1-for-25 start to the season.  Over the last eight games, he's hitting .375/.429/.469, and he hit a solid .299/387/.430 for the Sky Sox last season.

The bigger question is just how this will affect the Rockies.  Hawpe is obviously a key offensive player, so far one of the best on the Rockies this season.  Presumably, Seth Smith will start playing regularly, and Ryan Spilborghs will continue to get the occasional start against a left-handed pitcher (possibly platooning with Smith in the outfield.)  Young can play second base and center field; will Jim Tracy use him at second when Clint Barmes needs a day off?  Should Barmes feel any pressure on his job?  How will Tracy get Melvin Mora in the lineup now?  (He doesn't seem all that inclined to give Ian Stewart too many off days.)
