Rockies draft picks, rounds 4 through 50

We've already run down the Rockies' first four picks in the draft.  Here's a rundown of the entire rest of the Rockies' draft.

4.  Russell Wilson, CF, North Carolina State
Bats: R; Throws: R; 5'11", 190 lbs.; Birthdate: 11/29/88
Hometown: Richmond, VA (Collegiate HS)
Stats: 48 G, 25 GS, .306/.443/.490, 98 AB, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 18 BB, 25 K, 9/10 SB
Wilson is NC State's starting quarterback, but NC State blog Backing the Pack reports that Wilson intends to sign with the Rockies and continue to play football at NC State.  He actually didn't play a whole lot on the baseball field this year but did show some potential.  Wilson is a bit of a reach as a fourth-round pick, but we'll see how he develops once he starts concentrating on baseball full time.  He's unlikely to be much of an NFL draft prospect, at least at quarterback.

5.  Josh Slaats, RHP, University of Hawaii
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'5", 225 lbs.; Birthdate: 12/22/88
Hometown: San Ramon, CA (California HS)
Stats: 17 G, 16 GS, 5-4, 3.77 ERA, 74 IP, 33 BB, 75 K, .262 BAA
From his scouting video, Slaats appears to have a low-90s fastball to go with some pretty solid-looking breaking stuff, though from his stats he has some issues commanding all of it.  As a college junior he should sign fairly quickly and we'll see how he develops.  He has starter-quality stuff but needs to learn better control.

6.  Jared Simon, LF, University of Tampa
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'1", 210 lbs.; Birthdate: 3/9/89
Hometown: Tampa, FL (Armwood HS)
Stats: 54 G, 54 GS, ,361/.456/.649, 208 AB, 12 HR, 66 RBI, 28 BB, 35 K, 1/3 SB
An outfielder with some power potential, though we should note that the stats are inflated by the level of competition (Tampa plays D-II.)  Looks like he could be a good, polished college hitter, but we'll see how he fares against tougher competition than he faced in college.

7.  Kraig Sitton, LHP, Oregon State
Bats: L; Throws: L; 6'5", 195 lbs.; Birthdate: 7/13/88
Hometown: Carlton, OR (McMinnville HS)
Stats: 26 G, 1 GS, 1-2, 3.89 ERA, 37 IP, 13 BB, 30 K, .239 BAA
Sitton was drafted in the 17th round in 2009 by the Red Sox but did not sign.  My gut tells me he could be a lefty relief specialist; he worked out of the bullpen at Oregon State.  He still has a year of college eligibility remaining (he took a redshirt year.)

8.  Corey Dickerson, CF, Meridian (Miss.) CC
Bats: L; Throws: R; 6'1", 205 lbs.; Birthdate: 5/22/89
Hometown: Brookhaven, MS
The Rockies drafted Dickerson in the 29th round last year, but he didn't sign.  This year, he's worked his way up to the 8th round, but they'll also have to compete with a commitment to Mississippi State for next season.

9.  Geoff Parker, RHP, Florida State
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'3", 245 lbs.; Birthdate: 3/22/89
Hometown: Dade City, FL (Zephyrhills HS)
Stats: 28 G, 9 GS, 4-1, 4.60 ERA, 72.1 IP, 38 BB, 64 K, .265 BAA
Parker worked as a swingman for Florida State and didn't put up great numbers, but there could be something here that I'm not seeing.  He could just be an organizational guy.

10.  Brett Tanos, 2B, Santa Ana College
Bats: R; Throws: R; 5'11", 175 lbs.; Birthdate: 10/6/88
Hometown: Cypress, CA (Cypress HS)
Stats: 40 G, 40 GS, .313/.427/.638, 163 AB, 10 HR, 29 RBI, 22 BB, 16 K, 5/7 SB
Looks like a pretty advanced bat, though he'll be 22 in October so he's roughly the equivalent of a college junior.

11.  Juan "Hommy" Rosado, 1B, Barbe (La.) HS
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'0", 220 lbs.; Birthdate: 5/31/92
Hometown: Lake Charles, LA
From looking at Rosado's scouting video... wow, he looks slow.  On the other hand, reports are that Rosado can really hit, and "Hommy" is a cool nickname.  He's committed to LSU-Eunice (a junior college), but the Rockies ought to be able to sign him away from that.

12.  Matt Crocker, LHP, UT-San Antonio
Bats: L; Throws: L; 6'3", 190 lbs.; Birthdate: 5/24/89
Hometown: Kingwood, TX (Northeast Christian Academy)
Stats: 8 G, 8 GS, 2-3, 5.17 ERA, 47 IP, 8 BB, 42 K, .304 BAA
The ERA looks pretty ugly, but the peripherals are solid.  He was better as a reliever during his sophomore year, which could be his ultimate destination.  The stats make me wonder if he was injured this season.

13.  Josh Mueller, RHP, Eastern Illinois
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'4", 215 lbs.; Birthdate: 1/18/89
Hometown: Columbia, IL (Columbia HS)
Stats: 12 G, 12 GS, 3-2, 4.35 ERA, 68.1 IP, 30 BB, 78 K, .251 BAA
Solid numbers as a junior, though he was better as a sophomore and disappointed a bit this year.  The strikeout numbers are solid, but the OVC isn't one of the better conferences in Division I, and Mueller wasn't dominating the league the way Christian Friedrich did.  This looks like a solid pick, though.

14.  Taylor Reid, RHP, St. Mary's (CA)
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'3", 215 lbs.; Birthdate: 6/8/89
Hometown: Danville, CA (De La Salle HS)
Stats: 16 G, 5 GS, 2-3, 4.29 ERA, 42 IP, 15 BB, 30 K
Doesn't look like more than an organizational guy.

15.  William Swanner, C, La Costa Canyon (CA) HS
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'2", 185 lbs.; Birthdate: 9/10/91
Hometown: Carlsbad, CA
Swanner is viewed as an early-round talent, and we're assuming that his commitment to Pepperdine caused him to drop.  That suggests that he'll be a tough sign, but the talent is there.

16.  Jayson Langfels, 3B, Eastern Kentucky
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'2", 205 lbs.; Birthdate: 8/17/88
Hometown: Lexington, KY (Lafayette HS)
Stats: 55 G, 55 GS, .353/.458/.696, 204 AB, 16 HR, 52 RBI, 27 BB, 41 K, 12/16 SB
Solid year in a weaker D-I conference (EKU, of course, is also the alma mater of 2008 first-round pick Christian Friedrich.)  Will be interesting to see if Langfels develops.

17.  Ryan Casteel, C, Cleveland State (TN) CC
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'1", 205 lbs.; Birthdate: 6/6/91
Hometown: Cleveland, TN (Bradley Central HS)
Stats: 52 G, 52 GS, .353/.423/.674, 184 AB, 14 HR, 58 RBI, 22 BB, 18 K, 5/6 SB
Looks like a solid year as a JUCO freshman.  Will be interesting to see if he signs.

18.  Juan Perez, RHP, Bethune-Cookman
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'0", 190 lbs.; Birthdate: 5/30/89
Hometown: Orlando, FL (University HS)
Stats: 23 G, 0 GS, 1-3, 5.40 ERA, 10 SV, 33.1 IP, 20 BB, 40 K, .275 BAA
Not sure what to think of this.  Perez pulled double-duty as a third baseman and pitcher.  The strikeout numbers are solid, but he clearly needs work on his control, and the MEAC is a weak conference.

19.  Ryan Eades, RHP, Northshore (La.) HS
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'2", 178 lbs.; Birthdate: 12/15/91
Hometown: Slidell, LA
Eades is an LSU commitment and viewed as a very difficult sign, but might be worth a 19th-round flyer.

20.  Blake McDade, 1B, Middle Tennessee State
Bats: L; Throws: L; 6'1", 208 lbs.; Birthdate: 7/1/87
Hometown: Ooltewah, TN (Ooltewah HS)
Stats: 58 G, 58 GS, .399/.511/.592, 223 AB, 6 HR, 47 RBI, 41 BB, 21 K, 4/7 SB
Solid plate discipline, not a great deal of power, and he's almost 23.  Looks like an organizational player.

21.  Chris Giovinazzo, OF, UCLA
Bats: R; Throws: R; 5'11", 205 lbs.; Birthdate: 11/30/88
Hometown: Laguna Hills, CA (Laguna Hills HS)
Stats: 50 G, 23 GS, .279/.365/.432, 111 AB, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 11 BB, 20 K, 7/10 SB
Like Russell Wilson, Giovinazzo couldn't even crack the starting lineup most of the time, though UCLA had a really good team this year.

22.  Mark Tracy, C, Duquesne
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'4", 220 lbs.; Birthdate: 1/1/88
Hometown: Claremont, CA (Claremont HS)
Stats: 56 G, 56 GS, .290/.382/.500, 224 AB, 12 HR, 45 RBI, 27 BB, 50 K, 9/10 SB
Hooray nepotism!  12 homers in a college season is nothing to sneeze at.  But there's nothing to suggest any reason for this pick other than that he's the son of Jim Tracy.

23.  Bruce Kern, RHP, St. John's (NY)
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'1", 175 lbs.; Birthdate: 4/24/88
Hometown: Yaphank, NY (Bellport HS)
Stats: 17 G, 16 GS, 7-5, 6.23 ERA, 86.2 IP, 33 BB, 75 K, .286 BAA
Probably an organizational guy.  As a college senior he should sign quickly.

24.  Christian Bergman, RHP, UC-Irvine
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'2", 180 lbs.; Birthdate: 5/4/88
Hometown: Altadena, CA (St. Francis HS)
Stats: 20 G, 16 GS, 9-3, 3.72 ERA, 101.2 IP, 16 BB, 78 K, .274 BAA
Another college senior, quick sign, should provide organizational depth.

25.  Kenneth Roberts, LHP, Middle Tennessee State
Bats: L; Throws: L; 6'1", 200 lbs.; Birthdate: 3/9/88
Hometown: Murfreesboro, TN (Siegel HS)
Stats: 15 G, 15 GS, 4-6, 5.31 ERA, 98.1 IP, 18 BB, 55 K, .304 BAA
Yet another college senior and future organizational guy.

26.  Jacob Tanis, 3B, Mercer
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'1", 200 lbs.; Birthdate: 6/30/89
Hometown: Peachtree City, GA (McIntosh HS)
Stats: 62 G, 62 GS, .388/.448/.735, 268 AB, 22 HR, 88 RBI, 22 BB, 50 K, 7/10 SB
Those numbers look like he should have been gone well before the 26th round.  The catch is that Tanis is a draft-eligible sophomore, so he has options and isn't in a position where he has to sign.

27.  Blake Keitzman, LHP, Western Oregon
Bats: S; Throws: L; 6'0", 190 lbs.; Birthdate: 1/9/88
Hometown: Roseburg, OR (Roseburg HS)
Stats: 12 G, 12 GS, 7-3, 3.84 ERA, 75 IP, 23 BB, 76 K, .269 BAA
A college senior from a non-Division I university, Keitzman should sign.  The numbers look good, but again, the level of competition is so-so.

28.  Joseph "Tony" Rizzotti, RHP, Martin (Tex.) HS
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'4", 205 lbs.; Birthdate: 4/21/92
Hometown: Arlington, TX
Stats: 8-1, 0.67 ERA, 52 IP, 12 BB, 63 K, .110 BAA
We're assuming from the sick stat line and the fact that he fell all the way to the 28th round that Rizzotti is expected to honor his commitment to TCU in the fall.

29.  Marco Gonzales, LHP, Rocky Mountain (Colo.) HS
Bats: L; Throws: L; 6'0", 185 lbs.; Birthdate: 2/16/92
Hometown: Fort Collins, CO
Stats: 9-0, 2.15 ERA, 52 IP, 9 BB, 84 K
Sick statline, committed to Gonzaga, but according to The Coloradoan, he could be convinced to sign with the Rockies if the price is right.

30.  Jeff Ames, RHP, Lower Columbia (Wash.) College
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'4", 220 lbs.; Birthdate: 1/31/91
Hometown: Vancouver, WA (Skyview HS)
Stats: 10 G, 10 GS, 7-1, 2.34 ERA, 61.2 IP, 14 BB, 83 K
Solid pitching numbers; wonder if he's signable, given that he's a JUCO freshman.

31.  Russell Brewer, RHP, Vanderbilt
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'0", 200 lbs.; Birthdate: 2/25/88
Hometown: Norwood, NC (South Stanly HS)
Stats: 19 G, 0 GS, 2-2, 3.07 ERA, 29.1 IP, 8 BB, 39 K, .261 BAA
Solid numbers, wondering why he fell this far.  As a college senior, he should be an easy sign.

32.  Jason Monda, CF, Capital (Wash.) HS
Bats: L; Throws: L; 6'4"; Birthdate: 8/22/91
Hometown: Olympia, WA
Stats: .515 AVG, .894 SLG, 4 HR
Presumably, he'll be difficult to sign away from his commitment to Washington State.

33.  Jordan Ballard, 1B, Virginia Military Institute
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'3", 210 lbs.; Birthdate: 11/9/87
Hometown: Troy, VA (Monticello HS)
Stats: 55 G, 55 GS, .313/.369/.626, 214 AB, 18 HR, 58 RBI, 15 BB, 48 K, 2/2 SB
Decent power, questionable plate discipline, college senior.

34.  Steve Selsky, RF, Arizona
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'1", 205 lbs.; Birthdate: 7/20/89
Hometown: Manhattan Beach, CA (Loyola HS)
Stats: 58 G, 58 GS, .370/.448/.609, 235 AB, 9 HR, 52 RBI, 23 BB, 49 K, 11/16 SB
Solid numbers, but as a draft-eligible sophomore he may not sign.

35.  Justin Fradejas, OF, Auburn
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'0", 190 lbs.; Birthdate: 8/21/88
Hometown: Pensacola, FL (Pine Forest HS)
Stats: 55 G, 46 GS, .358/.417/.456, 193 AB, 3 HR, 33 RBI, 18 BB, 31 K, 14/21 SB
Decent numbers, but no power.  Presumably he's a center fielder.

36.  Jimmie Koch, LHP, Sarasota (Fla.) HS
Bats: L; Throws: L; 6'2", 190 lbs.; Birthdate: 5/16/92
Hometown: Sarasota, FL
Committed to Florida Tech and presumably a tough sign.

37.  Dan Kickham, RHP, Crowder (Mo.) College
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'4", 205 lbs.; Birthdate: 12/12/88
Hometown: Springfield, MO (Glendale HS)
Can't find much info on Kickham, other than that he's committed to Missouri State for next season.

38.  Logan Davis, SS, Cactus Shadows (Ariz.) HS
Bats: L; Throws: R; 6'2", 175 lbs.; Birthdate: 8/23/91
Hometown: Cave Creek, AZ
The son of 1989 Cy Young winner Mark Davis, Logan Davis is committed to Hofstra and probably won't sign.

39.  Joel McKeithan, SS, T.C. Roberson (N.C.) HS
Bats: S; Throws: R; 6'2", 173 lbs.; Birthdate: 8/15/91
Hometown: Asheville, NC
"Vanderbilt commitment," which, apparently, is a euphemism for "unsignable."

40.  Brandon Brennan, RHP, Capistrano Valley (CA) HS
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'4", 220 lbs.; Birthdate: 7/26/91
Hometown: Mission Viejo, CA
Stats: 4-5, 4.90 ERA, 54.1 IP, 34 BB, 37 K
Goes to the same high school that Tyler Matzek did and is also an Oregon commit, but he's (a) not as good as Matzek and (b) will likely actually go to Oregon.

41.  Ben Mordini, RHP, Cherry Creek (Colo.) HS
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'3", 205 lbs.; Birthdate: 7/3/92
Hometown: Denver, CO
Stats: 6-1, 3.55 ERA, 45.1 IP, 43 BB, 80 K
A local kid who's committed to Utah.  Probably won't sign, we think.

42.  Thomas Pereira, RHP, Indian Hills (Ia.) CC
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'3", 190 lbs.; Birthdate: 4/4/90
Don't know much about this guy, as he isn't listed on the Indian Hills roster.

43.  Kaleb Barlow, 3B, Jackson Prep (Miss.)
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'0", 195 lbs.; Birthdate: 5/3/91
Hometown: Jackson, MS
Committed to Chipola (FL) Junior College.  Hit .504 with 17 homers and 54 RBI as a junior.

44.  Kyle Richter, LHP, Santa Margarita (CA) HS
Bats: L; Throws: L; 6'4", 205 lbs.; Birthdate: 4/17/91
Hometown: Rancho Santa Margarita, CA
Stats: 3-5, 3.16 ERA, 51 IP, 27 BB, 56 K
Committed to USC.

45.  Michael Benjamin, SS, Basha (Ariz.) HS
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'0", 170 lbs.; Birthdate: 3/18/92
Hometown: Chandler, AZ
Stats: .494/.556/.940, 8 HR, 25 RBI, 15/19 SB
Son of former MLB player Mike Benjamin.  I can't find any information about a commitment, but since his dad's on the staff at Arizona State, I'm assuming he'll play there.

46.  Mitch Horacek, LHP, ThunderRidge (Colo.) HS
Bats: L; Throws: L; 6'5", 185 lbs.; Birthdate: 12/3/91
Hometown: Highlands Ranch, CO
Another local kid.  Committed to Dartmouth.

47.  Landon Appling, CF, El Campo (Tex.) HS
Bats: R; Throws: R; 5'10", 185 lbs.; Birthdate: 8/29/91
Hometown: El Campo, TX
Committed to Houston.

48.  Hunter Greenwood, RHP, Franklin (CA) HS
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'2", 195 lbs.; Birthdate: 3/9/92
Hometown: Elk Grove, CA
Stats: 6-2, 3.46 ERA, 54.2 IP, 26 BB, 55 K
Committed to Sacramento State.

49.  Evan Thomas, RHP, Poway (CA) HS
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'1", 195 lbs.; Birthdate: 4/12/92
Hometown: Poway, CA
Stats: 6-2, 2.95 ERA, 54.2 IP, 13 BB, 45 K
Committed to San Diego State.

50.  James Dykstra, RHP, Yavapai (AZ) JC
Bats: R; Throws: R; 6'4", 200 lbs.; Birthdate: 11/22/90
Hometown: San Diego, CA (Rancho Bernardo HS)
Stats: 1-0, 2.53 ERA, 10.2 IP, 8 BB, 5 K
Drafted by the Red Sox in the 40th round in 2009.
