The Coors Effect

Second-round pick: Chad Bettis, RHP, Texas Tech

Like the Rockies needed more pitching depth.

I had seen Chad Bettis going in the first round in a few mock drafts, so for him to still be on the board in the late second round is pretty solid.  Most scouts view Bettis as a reliever in the long term, but I really hope the Rockies give him a shot at starting instead of doing the cop-out "he's never going to be a starter, so we'll just put him in relief right away" like they did with Rex Brothers.

Bettis's junior season stats were very good: 7-4 with a 4.41 ERA (in a tough hitter's park in Lubbock, elevation around 3600 feet), 102 strikeouts and 33 walks in 85.2 innings.  Yeah, he's good.  I like the way this draft has gone for the Rockies so far.
